Game Recap: Softball |
VALPARAISO, Ind. – Freshman Abbott Badgley collected five hits and Bradley Softball received solid outings in the circle from senior Grace French and freshman Raegan Branon as the Braves topped Valparaiso 10-6 and 4-3 Sunday afternoon at the Valpo Softball Complex to complete the regular-season series sweep of the Beacons.

Bradley (17-15 overall, 5-4 MVC) swept a three-game Missouri Valley Conference road series for the first time since early during the 2019 league schedule (at Loyola) with the weekend sweep of Valparaiso (9-18 overall, 1-8 MVC).

Badgley, who went 5-for-8 in the series, was 5-for-6 with two doubles, a triple, two runs and four RBI to help highlight the day offensively for the Braves.  French finished the series 6-for-11 and had three hits, four runs and two RBI Sunday in addition to picking up the victory in the series finale.

In game one, Bradley wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, pushing two runs across in the top of the first.  French, who was 2-for-3 in the opener, started a two-out rally with a single and senior Samantha Smith followed with a walk.  Badgley drove both base runners home with a triple to right to give the Braves an early 2-0 lead.

Valparaiso answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, however.  Peyton Moeder led off the frame with a single and stole second before moving to third on a passed ball.  Moeder came home on a double to right center by Taylor Herschbach and the Beacons took a 3-2 lead on a two-run homer by Lauren Kehlenbrink.

Bradley tied it up with a run in the top of the second.  Abigail Tyler had a one-out double and moved to third on a bunt single by Lucy Mead.  Tyler later scored on a groundout by Camryn Monteer to knot the score at 3-3.

Raegan Branon took over for Badgley late in the first inning and sat Valpo down in order in the second, third and fourth innings, retiring 12 straight before a hit batter with two outs in the fifth.

The Braves broke the contest open with a five-run third.  French walked to start the inning and Smith added a single.  Badgley drove in French with the go-ahead run with the first of her two doubles in the game.  Van Bruesegen plated Smith from third, legging out a single on a squeeze bunt.  Mead had the big hit of the frame with a two-run double up the middle and Monteer capped the scoring when she knocked in Mead from third with a single to give Bradley an 8-3 advantage.

Valparaiso finally got to Branon in the fifth with the Beacons mounting a two-out rally.  Moeder was hit by a pitch and a Bradley error kept the inning alive.  Ryan Milkowski drove in a pair with a double to right field and a RBI double from Kehlenbrink cut the Bradley lead to 8-6.

Bradley got two runs back in the sixth with French smacking a two-run homer to right center that pushed the BU lead to 10-6.

The Braves turned a double play to erase a leadoff single in a scoreless sixth and Branon struck out a pair as the sat Valpo down in order in the seventh to close out the victory.  Branon struck out a career-best six in the win, scattering three hits and three unearned runs in 6.2 innings out of the bullpen as she improved to 4-3 on the year.

Valparaiso struck first in game two, getting a two-out run in the bottom of the first.  With two on and two outs, Kate Beckemeyer drove in Herschbach with the first run of the contest with a two-out single to right as the Beacons grabbed a 1-0 lead.

Bradley evened things up with a run in the top of the fourth.  French led off the frame with a double and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Badgley to knot the score at 1-1.

French limited Valparaiso to a total of three hits between the second, third, fourth and fifth innings.  With a runner at third and two outs in the bottom of the fifth, French got out the jam with a flyout to cap a 13-pitch at bat for Milkowski to end the inning.

The Braves struck for three runs in the top of the sixth.  Smith reached on a one-out single and came all the way around to score when Valpo committed an error on a Badgley single.  With runners on the corners Tyler plated Badgley with a sacrifice fly and freshman Shelby Katzakian ripped a RBI single down the left field line that scored van Breusegen as Bradley went in front 4-1.

Kehlenbrink led off the Valpo half of the sixth with a solo homer to pull the Beacons with two at 4-2 and Valparaiso had the tying run on base later in the inning.  With two out and two on, French got a flyout to end the threat, however.

Moeder led off the Valpo seventh with a walk and came around to score on a Herschbach double to cut the BU advantage to 4-3 and chase French from the circle.  Sophomore Camryn Schaller came on in relief and got a double play on a fly ball to left for the first two outs of the frame.  Kehlenbrink, who homered in all three games of the series, popped out to Schaller to end the contest as Bradley completed the series sweep with a 4-3 victory.

French scattered nine hits in her six innings of work and upped her record to 5-7 with the victory.  Schaller picked up her first save of the season and the fourth of her career with a six-pitch outing in her one inning of work.

Bradley closes out a nine-game MVC road swing next weekend with a three-game series at Drake that will start with a noon doubleheader Saturday.
