Game Recap: Softball |
DES MOINES, Iowa – Senior Lucy Mead collected four hits, going 4-for-7 with a run and RBI, but Drake limited Bradley to nine hits on the day as the Bulldogs topped the Braves 10-2 and 6-2 Saturday at Buel Field to open a three-game Missouri Valley Conference series.

Mead, who has three multi-hit games in the last four outings, had a double among her four hits and also stole a pair of bases in the twinbill to lead Bradley (17-17 overall, 5-6 MVC).  Drake (11-20 overall, 5-5 MVC) was led by Emily Valtman, who went 4-for-7 with three runs and five RBI as she scored or drove in seven of the Bulldogs' 16 runs on the day.

In the opener, Drake collected 10 hits and Bulldog starter Nicole Timmons held Bradley to just four hits as the Braves dropped the first game of the series 10-2.

Bradley had an early lead after getting a two-out run in the top of the first.  Mead had a one-out single and stole both second and third before coming home on a two-out Samantha Smith single to give the Braves a 1-0 advantage.

Drake answered with four runs in the bottom of the first, however.  Valtman led off the frame with a solo homer and Macy Johnson, who followed with a single, later scored on a wild pitch.  A two-out walk to Libby Ryan proved costly as she eventually came home on a Makayla Rice double to give Drake a 3-1 lead.  A Carey Koenig RBI single plated Rice to put Drake in front 4-1 to cap the inning.

Bradley struck for another two-out run in the top of the third.  Camryn Monteer drew a walk and Mead followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position.  With two outs, freshman Abbott Badgley struck out, but reached on an error, and Monteer was able to race home to pull the Braves within two at 4-2.

The bottom of the third saw Drake come up with another run, with a pair of walks and a passed ball putting runners at the corners for Koenig, who made it a 5-2 Drake lead with a sacrifice fly to left.

Bradley stranded runners in scoring position in both the fourth and fifth innings, before Drake ended the contest with a five-run fifth.  Koenig drove in her third run of the contest with a RBI single and a bases loaded single by Valtman drove in two more.  Delaney Taylor capped the 10-2 Drake victory with a two-run single up the middle.

Drake had the early lead in the nightcap, scoring single runs in each of the first three innings.  A two-out walk in the top of the first and a Bradley error helped lead to the first run of the contest as the Bulldogs grabbed a 1-0 lead through one inning of play.

Rice led off the Drake half of the second inning with a solo homer to give the Bulldogs at 2-0 lead.

Monteer helped spark a two-out Bradley rally in the top of the third with a single and ended up at third after a Drake error when she stole second.  Mead plated Monteer with a single to right to cut the Drake advantage in half at 2-1.

The Bulldogs answered with a run in the bottom half of the third, however.  Taylor led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a Bradley error before advancing to third on a flyout.  She eventually was awarded home when the Braves were called for obstruction at the plate after trying to pick Taylor off of third, giving Drake a 3-1 advantage.

Bradley managed to strike for another run in the fourth.  With runners at second and third after Grace French singled to start the inning and Smith walked, senior Keeler van Breusegen made it a one-run game once again at 3-2 with a sacrifice fly.

A two-out Drake rally in the fourth would give the Bulldogs a 5-2 edge.  Valtman followed a Koenig single with a RBI double and would later score on Bradley's third error of the contest.

Bradley left runners in scoring position in each of the final four frames and Drake added an insurance run in the sixth, taking a 6-2 lead with the Bulldogs plating a run on a RBI groundout by Valtman.

The Braves tried to mount a late two-out rally in the seventh with Monteer and Mead both collecting two-out singles.  Drake starter Paige Bedsworth (4-1) got a groundout to end the threat as she earned the win for the Bulldogs in a complete game effort.

The teams close out the three-game series Sunday with a noon contest.
