Game Recap: Softball |
PEORIA, Ill. – Senior Lucy Mead had five hits on the day and fellow senior Camryn Monteer was 3-for-6, but league-leading Northern Iowa topped Bradley Softball in both games of a doubleheader Saturday at Petersen Hotels Field at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex, with the Panthers posting 7-1 and 8-1 victories.

Mead and Monteer accounted for all four of Bradley's hits in the opener with the duo both going 2-for-3 at the plate.  In the nightcap, Mead was 3-for-4 and Monteer capped the day by going 1-for-3.  Freshman Katie Pederson had the only other Bradley hit on the day, belting a third-inning solo homer in the second game of the afternoon.

Northern Iowa (31-12 overall, 22-1 MVC) struck for a run in the first inning of the opener.  Mya Dodge reached on a dropped third strike to open the contest and later scored on a double by Madison Parks to give the Panthers an early 1-0 advantage.

Bradley (24-25 overall, 12-14 MVC) answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning.  Monteer led off the frame with a single and scored on a Mead double down the left line to tie it up at 1-1.

The Braves left runners at the corners in the bottom of the third after a two-out double by Mead and senior Grace French reached on an error.

Northern Iowa broke the game open with a three-run third that included a solo homer by Emmy Wells, RBI single from Daryn Lamprecht and RBI double by Dodge as the Panthers went back in front 4-1.

UNI added two more runs in the fifth and a run in the seventh to take the first game 7-1.  Panthers' starter Kailyn Packard retired 11 of the final 13 hitters she faced, working around a two-out Monteer single in the fifth and a two-out Abbott Badgley in the sixth for scoreless frames as she improved to 19-5 on the year with the win.

In the day's second game, Bradley had an early scoring opportunity with two on with one out in the first after a Mead bunt single and French walk.  Northern Iowa hurler Samantha Heyer got out of the jam, however, with a strikeout and groundout to keep the Braves off the scoreboard in the first.

The Panthers pushed two runs across in the top of the second with a hit batter and single leading to a run. Lamprecht made it a 2-0 UNI advantage with a two-out RBI single.

A three-run homer by Wells, her 19th of the year, highlighted a four-run third for the Panthers as the UNI lead was pushed to 6-0.

Bradley's lone run in the nightcap came in the bottom of the third when Pederson ripped a leadoff solo homer to right center.

With Northern Iowa leading 7-1, Bradley threatened in the bottom of the fifth after loading the bases with no outs.  Pederson drew a walk to open the frame and Monteer singled.  With runners at second and third after a wild pitch, Mead reached on a dropped third strike to load the bases.  Heyer, who struck out 11 in the contest, sandwiched a pair of strikeouts around a popout to end the inning, however.

The Panthers added a run in the seventh and Heyer worked around a two-out Mead single in the seventh to close out the complete game victory as she improved to 10-3 on the season.

Bradley and Northern Iowa will wrap up the three-game series Sunday with a contest at noon at Petersen Hotels Field at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex.  Bradley's five seniors (French, Mead, Monteer, Samantha Smith and Keeler van Breusegen) will be recognized prior to the game.
