Somov’s Brace Leads Bradley Soccer to 2-1 Season-Opening Victory

Peoria, Ill. – Redshirt freshman Kaloyan Somov made his first collegiate game one to remember as the rookie netted two goals – including the game-winner in the 88th minute – to lead the Bradley soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Northern Kentucky in the 2022 season opener.

After nearly opening the scoring in the first half but only to be called offside, Somov finally broke through in the game's 65th minute. Erik Catus' initial shot was saved by the Norse goalkeeper and Somov raced to the rebound and found the netting for the 1-0 advantage.

Northern Kentucky, however, would square the game at one 15 minutes later in the game's 81st minute. Ben Hegge took advantage of a rebound for the 1-1 game with less than 10 minutes left.

Somov would be determined to go out a winner though. Francesco Pettinaroli found the rookie wide open on the right flank, leading to a 1-on-1 with the goalie. Somov faked the shot to get the netminder to commit to his right before dribbling past him and finishing for the 2-1 game-winner with just 2:03 remaining. Jack Armitage also added an assist on the contest's final tally.

Nick Burke led the Braves in goal in his first game in the Red & White, making seven saves in the winning effort. Overall, Northern Kentucky finished with a 17-11 edge in shots during the contest.

The Braves look to continue their winning ways on Sunday with a road game at Kansas City. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
