Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Allison Novak

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The Bradley Braves encountered a challenging opponent in the Illinois Fighting Illini on Dec. 12, 2024, at the State Farm Center. Despite an encouraging start and several strong individual performances, the Braves were unable to maintain momentum, falling 70-52 in a competitive nonconference matchup.

Positive Start for the Braves
Bradley opened the game with energy and efficiency, scoring 17 points in the first quarter to keep pace with Illinois. Guard Soleil Barnes set the tone early, contributing key baskets and showing versatility with her passing and rebounding. Kaylen Nelson and Amy O'Hara also made important plays, helping Bradley stay within three points after the first 10 minutes of action.

Notable Performances

  • Soleil Barnes: Barnes led the Braves with 12 points, shooting 4-for-12 from the field and hitting two 3-pointers. She also tallied five rebounds and four assists in an all-around effort.

  • Ellie McDermid: McDermid provided a spark off the bench, scoring eight points and showcasing her range with two 3-pointers.

  • Amy O'Hara: O'Hara added eight points and five rebounds, contributing physicality on both ends of the floor.

Key Takeaways
Bradley showed resilience and flashes of promise, particularly in their perimeter shooting and defensive intensity. The team's ability to hit eight 3-pointers highlighted their offensive potential, with Barnes and McDermid combining for four of those. However, Illinois' advantage in the paint (42 points compared to Bradley's 20) and points off turnovers (21 for Illinois) underscored areas for improvement.

Moving Forward
The loss drops Bradley to 5-3 on the season, but the team can draw positives from their performance against a strong opponent. The efforts of Barnes, McDermid, and O'Hara provide a solid foundation as the Braves prepare for Missouri Valley Conference play. With a focus on reducing turnovers and improving rebounding, Bradley looks poised to make adjustments as they move deeper into the season.

What's Next
The Braves will face another Big Ten competitor when they travel to Northwestern to take on the Wildcats at 2 p.m. on Dec. 15.
