DeKalb, IL -- The Bradley Braves drop a road MVC contest to the Northern Illinois Huskies 2-1 in DeKalb, IL.
The Braves hit the road looking to earn their first Missouri Valley Conference win of the season as they took on the Northern Illinois Huskies. Both teams were coming off draws in their previous matches against Drake and UIC, respectively. A win for either the Braves or the Huskies would give them a chance to be tied at the top of the league table by the end of the evening.
In what was a quiet first half, neither side generated many clear chances on goal. NIU and Bradley combined for nine total opportunities, with only a few on target. The half was marked mostly by transition play and midfield possession battles, with the Huskies holding more of the ball and limiting Bradley's chances to create. The half ended scoreless, with NIU firing off two of their eight chances in the final two minutes but failing to convert.
As the second half began, Bradley found better rhythm in key moments, culminating in a well-worked goal by Mitch Coughlonl, his fifth of the season, assisted by Dom Woolley in the 61st minute. However, the Huskies stuck to their possession-based approach and created several close chances of their own. Goalkeeper Berry and the Bradley defense held firm heading into the final five minutes of the match.
Northern Illinois finally broke through in the 87th minute with a goal by Martin Montoya, assisted by Vance Sheffield, to level the match at 1-1. Energized by the equalizer, the Huskies weren't done. Less than two minutes later, in the 89th minute, NIU scored again this time off a corner kick when Vance Sheffield found the net with an assist from Martin Montoya.
Bradley couldn't find a second goal in the closing seconds, and the match ended in a 2-1 loss. The Braves will be back in action on Tuesday when they host DePaul in a non-conference clash against the Blue Demons.
