Peoria, Ill. – Bradley Women's Basketball won their ninth straight home game on Sunday, defeating the UIC Flames, 73-63.
Pulling Away Early
The Braves came out firing in the opening 10 minutes, taking an early lead that they didn't give up for the rest of the half. Bradley had an eight-point run late in the quarter that helped them take a 19-8 lead into the second quarter. UIC held their own in the second quarter, going back and forth with the Braves to keep the deficit the same as at the end of the first quarter. A very late jumper from the Flames cut the deficit to nine as Bradley took a 32-23 lead into halftime.
Standout Performances for Bradley
Maya Foz earned her second consecutive Ameren Illinois Player of the Game honor, totaling 21 points, four rebounds, four steals, and two assists. Kaylen Nelson also continued her strong streak, finishing the day with 17 points, six rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Kali Fortson had a strong day, totaling eight points and six rebounds while shooting 4-for-4 from the field in just 11 minutes of play. Ellie McDermid finished her day with nine points and four rebounds.
A Strong Fourth Secures the Win
The Braves struggled in the third quarter, as UIC went on a 10-point run to cut the deficit to three. Both teams continued to go back and forth for the remainder of the third quarter, with Bradley holding a slight edge until the final minute, when the Flames went on a six-point run to tie the game at 49. UIC took the lead on a three-pointer early in the fourth quarter, but the Braves stuck with them, keeping the game within two possessions until there was just over two minutes left. Foz gave the Braves their first lead of the quarter with just over two minutes left, which gave Bradley momentum to go on an 11-point run to end the game with a final score of 73-63.
Defensive Notes
The Braves showcased their great defense early in this one to help them jump out to an early lead, holding UIC to 10-for-30 from the field and 0-for-9 from beyond the arc in the first half. The Flames finished the day shooting 24-for-63 from the field and 4-for-19 from three. Bradley outrebounded UIC 37-30 and held UIC to just nine second-chance points on 13 offensive rebounds. Meanwhile, the Braves scored 15 second-chance points on 11 offensive rebounds, and they scored 18 points off UIC's 13 turnovers.
