Volleyball Picks Up First Valley Win

PEORIA, Ill. -- Junior Kaitlyn Brenner had a career-high 16 kills and fellow junior Briony Hammet added 16 kills and 15 digs as the Bradley volleyball team posted its first Missouri Valley Conference and home victory of the season with a four-game win against Drake at Robertson Memorial Field House Saturday. Game scores in favor of the Braves were 30-28, 30-24, 24-30, 30-21.

Brenner posted a career high 16 kills and hit .324 for the night to go along with team highs of three aces and five blocks. Hammet finished with her team-best seventh double-double of the season with 16 kills and 15 digs as she became the 15th player in program history with 600 career kills and 600 digs.

Brenner and junior Lindsay Stalzer carried the Braves to 30-28 victory in game one as the duo combined for 13 of Bradley's 19 kills in the game. Stalzer had seven of her match-high 19 kills during game one and Brenner added six kills on nine attempts and hit .667 during the frame. The Braves had seven service errors to help keep the Bulldogs in the game.

Bradley posted a 30-24 victory in game two to take a 2-0 lead. Drake posted five blocks in game two to keep the contest close, but the Braves owned a .286 hitting percentage during game two compared to .105 for the Bulldogs. Stalzer had six kills, while Hammet and freshman Bethany Dulle added five kills to help the Braves take a 2-0 advantage.

Drake hit .379 during game three as Betsy Funk totalled five kills on six swings and hit .833 to help Drake to a 30-24 win. The Braves put the Bulldogs away in game four, however, behind a solid defensive effort. Bradley had 24 of its 58 digs during the fourth and final game paced by Gillian Falknor's seven digs. Hammet and sophomore Kelly Niemeyer led the Braves offensively with four kills each in a 30-21 Bradley victory.

The win was the Braves first home victory of the season, improving Bradley's record to 7-13 overall, 1-8 in the Valley. Stalzer had a match-high 19 kills and added three blocks, helping the Braves to a 72-53 advantage in kills on the night.

Betsy Funk led Drake with 11 kills, while Eve Johnson added 10 kills and 10 digs. Defense helped keep the Bulldogs in the match as the totalled 11 blocks, including 10 block assists by Samantha Nelson and held a 41-34 edge in digs heading into the final game.

Bradley closes out a four-match homestand next weekend against Indiana State and I-74 rival Illinois State. The Braves and Sycamores play Friday at 7 p.m. at Robertson Memorial Field House. The homestand concludes Saturday at 7 p.m. against Illinois State.
