SPRINGFIELD, Mo. ? Sophomores Teri Chan and Elise Montrose both picked up singles victories to highlight second day action at the Missouri Valley Conference women's tennis individual championships Saturday in Springfield, Mo.
Chan moved into the title match of #3 singles with a 7-5, 6-1 victory against Zuzana Palovic of Southern Illinois in the semifinals Saturday. Chan advanced to Sunday's title match against Southwest Missouri State's Liz Garza.
Montrose advanced in the first round of the back draw by default and then posted a 6-4, 7-5 victory against Maria Blanco of Southern Illinois to move into Sunday's fifth-place match of the #1 singles bracket. She will face Northern Iowa's Meghana Paritala in the fifth-place match Sunday.
At #2 singles, senior Kelley Wood fell to Southern Illinois' Amanda Taillefer, 7-5, 6-2 and will face Evansville's Beth Peyton Sunday in the ninth-place match.
Fellow senior Nicole Kirley will also play in Sunday's ninth-place match at #4 singles, after suffering a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Emily Krodel of Evansville. Kirley will play Indiana State's Imane Lahlou during Sunday's action.
At #5 singles, freshman Katie Bowen dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Creighton's Christina Alexander in the back draw. Bowen will face Laura Bredniak of Southern Illinois in the seventh-place match at #5 singles.
Senior Marissa Bianchi will play Lisa Ludwig of Creighton for third-place in the #6 singles bracket after falling to Illinois State's Ashley Maxwell in straight sets; 6-0, 6-0 in Saturday's semifinals. Freshman Jess Sampias rounded out singles play, finishing seventh at #7 singles after losing 6-3, 6-2 to Creighton's Nicole Thurston.
The Braves will be playing for seventh place in both #2 and #3 doubles during Sunday's final day. The duo of Kirley and Chan fell to Drake's Eveline Rusdianto and Cheen Alkahatib, 8-3 at #2 doubles. Kirley and Chan will play the Evansville team of Erica Baas and Emily Kordel for seventh place.
Bowen and Sampias had a tight match with Drake's Melissa Rippy and Rebekah Thomas, before falling 8-6 at #3 doubles. The Bradley duo will face Evansville's Jamie Petty and Charly Kraft for seventh-place at #3 doubles.
At #1 doubles, Wood and Montrose lost 8-5 to the Northern Iowa duo of Carolina Hannes and Meghana Paritala. The Braves will face Creighton's Katie Chiu and Deidre Senders for ninth place on Sunday.
Bradley concludes play at the MVC Individual Championships in Springfield, Mo., Sunday.
