PEORIA, Ill. -- For the second consecutive season, junior Lindsay Stalzer has been voted a first-team Missouri Valley Conference scholar-athlete, making her the seventh player in program history to earn the honor twice.
Just the third Bradley volleyball player to earn the honor as both a sophomore and junior, Stalzer leads the Missouri Valley Conference in kills (527) and kills per game (4.97). Stalzer set a Bradley season record with 527 kills, becoming the first Brave to post 500 kills in a season after breaking Abigail Kohnen's 1999 record of 498 kills. She joined Stephanie Behrns, Laura Benzing, Tegan Catlin, Nicole Gagnon, Samantha Hardwick and Jenna Passman as repeat scholar-athlete selections for the Braves. Both Benzing and Passman earned the honor all three years they were eligible.
An engineering major with a 3.44 cumulative grade point average, Stalzer was the only player on the team to play in every game and led the team in kills, hitting percentage, aces and blocks. She became the 11th player in program history to record 1,000 career kills and joined all-time kills leader Jenny Pavlas as the only players in program history with 1,200 career kills as a junior.
Lindsay was one of five repeat first-team Scholar-Athlete selections, joining Karen Augspurger and Sara Younes of Wichita State, Erica Miller of Southern Illinois and Leah Ratzlaff from Creighton. A total of 40 student-athletes were nominated for the MVC Scholar-Athlete team with 13 individuals earning a spot on the first-team.
The criteria for the Valley Scholar-Athlete team parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.00 cumulative grade-point average. Also, students must have participated in at least 75 percent of the regular season and be a sophomore in academic and athletic standing at their institution.
