PEORIA, Ill. -- Southern Illinois made 22 of 31 (.710) field goal attempts during a period of 19:34 that spanned both halves and rode the host streak to an 89-73 Missouri Valley Conference road win at Bradley (11-8, 4-7) Wednesday night at Carver Arena.
Senior guard Darren Brooks led four Salukis in double-figures with 20 points and added a game-high seven assists. Tony Young, who made 4-of-5 3-point baskets, chipped in with 16 points off the bench. Jamaal Tatum added 13 points and reserve forward Randal Falker contributed 10 points.
Bradley junior forward Marcellus Sommerville (Peoria, Ill./Peoria H.S.) scored 15 of his team-high 20 points during the first 12:42 of the game. Reserve forward Lawrence Wright (Beale A.F.B., Calif./Wheatland H.S.) earned his first career double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds and freshman center Patrick O'Bryant completed the double-digit scoring with 15 points.
The first 15 minutes of the game featured five ties and four lead changes, but when Bradley went cold during the closing minutes of the first half, Southern Illinois took control. Wright gave the Braves their final lead, 30-29, by draining two free throws with 4:54 left in the first half. Beginning with a Brooks layup on the previous possession, however, the Salukis closed the half by making seven of their final 12 field goal attempts. After Bradley reserve Michael Rembert stepped out of bounds following a defensive rebound on what would have been SIU's final shot of the half, LaMar Owen drained a jumper just before the first-half buzzer for a 43-34 Saluki lead at the break.
The Salukis all but put the game away by making 15 of their first 19 field goal attempts of the second half, including 5-of-7 from 3-point range, capped by an Owen jumper with 6:00 remaining in the game for a 78-59 lead. The one area SIU struggled during most of the game was at the free throw line, but the Salukis made 10-of-13 attempts from the charity stripe in the final 5:29 to eliminate any hopes of a Bradley rally.
Bradley will try to end its season-long three-game losing streak Saturday at 4:05 p.m. when they visit arch rival Illinois State in the first game of the annual Interstate-74 rivalry. Saturday's game will be televised locally by WMBD (CBS 31) and will be available to viewers outside of Central Illinois through an internet video stream at www.bubraves.tv
