CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Senior Lindsay Stalzer was one of three Bradley players with 15 or more kills with her 21 kills Friday night at Northern Iowa, but the Braves upset bid of Missouri Valley Conference power UNI fell short as the Panthers held off the Braves 21-30, 30-25, 31-33, 23-30 at the West Gym.
The teams split the opening two games and Bradley appeared to be in control of game three when the Braves jumped out to a 22-15, but Northern Iowa used a 5-0 run to claw back into the match. Bradley managed to keep the Panthers at bay, taking a 28-26 lead before UNI scored three consecutive points thanks in part to two Braves hitting errors as the Panthers took a 29-28 lead. Bradley eventually took a 31-30 lead in the game, but UNI notched the final three points of the game to take a 2-1 lead in the match behind a 33-31 win.
The Panthers came out swinging in game four, boasting a .300 hitting percentage, while limiting Bradley to a .195 attack percentage in the frame as UNI cruised to a 30-23 win to close out the match.
Stalzer had a match-high 21 kills and was joined by senior Briony Hammet and junior Amber DeBroux in double figures as both Braves recorded 15 kills on the evening. Stalzer also tied for match-high honors with 16 digs to post her team-best 14th double-double of the year. She now has 1,754 career kills and needs 26 kills to take over sole possession of second place on the Missouri Valley Conference career kills list.
Hammet finished with her fifth double-double of the year, adding 11 digs to go along with her 15 kills. In addition to becoming the 14th player in program history with 900 career digs, Hammet also recorded her 100th career service ace, making her the eighth player in program history with 700 career kills, 700 digs and 100 aces, Senior Gillian Falknor also helped lead the defensive efforts, tying Stalzer for match-high honors with 16 digs.
Bradley (13-12 overall, 7-5 MVC) is now in fifth place in the Missouri Valley Conference with a two game lead on both Creighton and Southern Illinois which are tied for sixth place in the Valley standings at 5-7.
Northern Iowa (15-8 overall, 9-3) remained alone in third place in the standings with the victory. The Panthers had four players reach double figures in kills, led by Amy Sampson's 18 kills.
Bradley returns to action Tuesday when the Braves close out the non-conference portion of the schedule at Western Illinois at 7 p.m.
