Kelly Krumwiede scored 15 second-half points en route to a game-high 22 and junior
Amy Peters posted her first career double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds, as the duo helped spark the Bradley women's basketball team to a 78-73 victory over Illinois-Chicago in the team's season opener Friday afternoon at Robertson Memorial Field House.
The Braves trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half, but closed the period on a 14-7 run to go into the locker room trailing 39-31. Peters and Krumwiede dominated play in the second half, combining for 28 of Bradley's 47 points in the period on 8-of-9 shooting while also snagging 15 rebounds in the final 20 minutes of action.
The Flames built their lead back to 11 points at 44-33, before Peters scored nine consecutive points during a 13-0 Bradley run that was capped by a Krumwiede layup.
UIC retook the lead and later led by seven points (57-50) with just under six minutes to play. Sophomore Devyn Flanagan hit a pair of three-pointers and Krumwiede made a driving layup during an 8-2 Braves spurt to cut the deficit to one point (59-58) with 4:39 to go.
Bradley eventually took the lead with 2:09 left on a pair of free throws by Krumwiede giving the Braves a 66-65. Bradley was able to hold off any UIC rally attempts by making 14 consecutive free throws in the final 2:09 of play to close the game and complete the come-from behind win with a 78-73 victory.
Peters, whose previous career high for rebounds was seven, finished with a game-high 15 rebounds and also added 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Krumwiede made 5-of-6 field goal attempts and converted 12-of-15 free throw attempts, to finish with a game-high 22 points.
Her 22 points are the most by a Bradley player in a season-opener since Carrie Coffman netted 30 points at Missouri on Nov. 27, 1994. In addition, her 22 points are the most by a Bradley freshman in a season-opener since Judy Burns scored 23 points against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville to open the 1981-82 season. Krumwiede's 15 free throw attempts are the most by a Brave since Stephanie White was a perfect 15-for-15 from the line at Western Illinois on Dec. 4, 1998.
Joining Krumwiede and Peters in double figures for the Braves were Flanagan and junior guard Jen Brown, who both added 10 points. Bradley dominated the glass, owning a 43-23 edge in rebounding, which included 16 offensive boards. Bradley had a 17-4 edge in second chance points and the Braves bench outscored the Flames reserves 36-9.
Illinois-Chicago had three players score in double figures with Krystal Hugelier scoring a team-best 19 points. Chrissy Dizon added 18 points, nine assists and five boards, while LaShonda Grant was also in double figures with 16 points.
Bradley returns to action Monday night when the Braves play host to Valparaiso at 7:05 p.m. at Robertson Memorial Field House.
