Box Score CORAL GABLES, Fla. ? Bradley rallied from several double-digit deficits but never got over the hump Saturday evening, as Duquesne led from start to finish in a 70-60 Dukes victory in the consolation game of the Miami Thanksgiving Tournament in Coral Gables, Fla.
The Braves trailed by as many as 13 points in the game and had several chances to take the lead in the contest but never managed to come up with the timely bucket. Bradley fell to 2-2 on the season with the loss.
Bradley scored just six points in the first 9:40 of the game, making just two of its first 16 shots from the field. Duquesne led by as many 13 points in the first half (28-15 with 6:16 left in the period) before the Braves found their offense, connecting on eight of their final 17 shots in the half.
Bradley also held the Dukes scoreless for the next four minutes to help key an 8-0 run that pulled the Braves to within five points at 28-23 with just over three minutes to play. Duquesne used a 6-0 spurt near the end of the half to push the lead back to 11 points, before senior Molly Hartke drained a three-pointer from the corner with four seconds to play to put the Braves halftime deficit at 34-26.
The Braves committed just six turnovers in the first half, but made just 10-of-33 shots from the field (30.3 percent), while Duquesne shot 51.9 percent (14-for-27) and outrebounded the Braves 20-18.
Duquesne extended its lead to as many as 12 points in the opening minutes of the second half, before the Braves used a 6-0 run to pull to within six points at 45-39. The Dukes held a 50-41 advantage with 11 minutes remaining, before Bradley made five consecutive free throws during a 8-1 Braves run capped by a Venessa Ostergaard three-pointer that pulled Bradley to within two points at 51-49 with nine minutes to go.
The Dukes pushed the lead back to seven points on two occasions, before the Braves forced a pair of Duquesne turnovers during a 6-0 spurt that cut the lead to 58-57 with just over four minutes to play on a Molly Hartke layup. Bradley missed four consecutive shots and turned the ball over on three consecutive possessions as Duquesne regained control of the game with a 9-0 run that gave the Dukes a 67-57 lead with just under a minute on the clock. The Braves couldn't cut any further into the lead, falling 70-60 to finish fourth at the Miami Thanksgiving Tournament.
Junior Ashley Chelleen led all Bradley players with 14 points off the bunch, hitting eight of nine free throw attempts and grabbing five rebounds. Freshman Kelly Krumwiede was the only other Bradley player in double figures with 10 points and a team-high 10 boards.
The Braves starters combined to shoot 6-for-26 from the field, while the reserves shot 11-for-39. Bradley committed a season-low 15 turnovers but shot just 30.8 percent from the field and failed to outrebound an opponent for the first time this year.
Duquesne (3-1 overall) finished third at the Miami Thanksgiving Tournament with the victory. Aiga Bautre led all scorers with 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Loui Hall (15 points) and Nicole Sinclair (12 points) were also in double figures for the Dukes.
Bradley returns to action Wednesday when the Braves play at Western Illinois at 7:05 p.m. in Macomb, Ill.
