PEORIA, Ill. -- Sophomore Devyn Flanagan had a team-high 11 points and four steals to lead Bradley, but the Braves fell 60-55 to visiting St. Mary's (Calif.) Thursday night at Robertson Memorial Field House after shooting 35.6 percent from the field against the Gaels.
The Braves (3-5 overall) committed a season-low 14 turnovers on the night, but hit just 21 of 59 shots from the field, including 3-of-16 three-point attempts. St. Mary's (3-6 overall) shot 44 percent from the field and hit 27.3 percent (6-for-22) from three-point range, while ending a four-game losing streak.
Bradley led 20-19 with 8:28 remaining in the first half, when St. Mary's went on a 12-2 run to take a 31-22 lead with just under three minutes before the break. The Braves cut the halftime deficit to seven points with Flanagan making a pair of free throws with under three seconds in the half to cut the Gaels lead to 35-28 at the intermission.
The Braves scored the first four points of the second half to quickly cut the deficit to 35-32 with 18:49 to play. Freshman guard Skye Johnson scored six points during a 10-2 Bradley spurt that put the Braves ahead 44-43 with 9:47 remaining in the game.
With Bradley clinging to a 50-49 lead after an Ashley Chelleen basket with just over five minutes to play, St. Mary's connected on back-to-back three-pointers to take a 55-50 lead. The Gaels led 57-52 with 2:54 to go following a basket by Erika Urmonaite. Both teams went scoreless for nearly two minutes before freshman Venessa Ostergaard hit a three-pointer from the left wing to make it a two-point game, 57-55, with 1:09 on the clock.
St. Mary's missed a shot with 38 seconds left but snagged the offensive board. Jontelle Smith was fouled and made both free throws to push the Gaels lead back to four points at 59-55 with 28.8 seconds to play. The Braves missed a pair of shots at the other end and Maija Lahde added a free throw with 7.5 seconds to provide the final margin in a 60-55 St. Mary's victory.
Flanagan led the Braves with 11 points and four steals in 34 minutes of action. Johnson hit all four shots from the field to finish with eight points, while also adding two assists. Junior Amy Peters also tallied eight points on the night. Freshman Kelly Krumwiede tied for game-high honors with seven rebounds.
St. Mary's had three players reach double figures, with Smith leading the way with a game-high 17 points. Urmonaite added 11 points, while Lahde had 10 points and tied Krumwiede for game-high honors with seven rebounds.
Bradley closes out the non-conference portion of its schedule Sunday when the Braves host Saint Louis at 2:05 p.m. at Robertson Memorial Field House.
