Box Score CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Senior Brittany Mynsberge drove in two runs and freshmen Trisha Kowalewski went 2-for-4 with two RBI as the duo helped power the Bradley Softball team to a 6-3 victory over Virginia as the Braves wrapped up play at the Frost Classic in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Bradley finished with the weekend with a 2-4 record at the Frost Classic in the first action of the season.
Freshman Molly Bergeson helped the Braves jump out to early lead as she led off the game with her first career double down the left field line. Bergeson advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single to left center by Mynsberge as Bradley grabbed an early 1-0 lead.
The Braves plated two runs in the top of the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. With runners at first and second with two outs, Kowalewski drove in the first of two runs in the game with a single to center field that scored pinch runner Christine Cooney from second base. A Virginia error on a ground ball hit by Elizabeth Wilson allowed junior Joanna Pettit to score from second base with the second run of the inning.
Freshman Stephanie Ramsey drew a walk to lead off the fourth inning and Bergeson belted her second double of the day to put runners at second and third with no outs. Mynsberge drove in Ramsey from third base with a ground ball, but Bergeson was tagged out on the play. Pettit and senior Angela Toures followed with singles as Mynsberge crossed the plate on Toures' single to push the Braves lead to 5-0.
The Cavaliers pushed three runs across in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull to within 5-3. Elea Crockett led off the inning with a triple to right center and scored on Jessica Taylor's single down the right field line. Sara Larquier followed with a triple of her own to score Taylor from first base. After a Bradley pitching change, Jenn Wynn singled to plate Larquier. Kierstie Cameron singled for Virginia's fifth consecutive hit to lead off the inning, but freshman hurler Rebecca Bishop got out of the jam without any further damage as the Braves took a 5-3 lead into the seventh inning.
Bradley added an insurance run in the seventh inning when Kowalewski belted her second home run of the season with a two-out solo-blast to left field that gave the Braves a 6-3 advantage. Bishop retired the Virginia batters in order in the bottom of the seventh to pick up her first career save.
Junior Brittany Dehler picked up the win in the circle for Bradley, giving up six hits and three runs in five inning of work. Dehler improved to 2-0 on the season with the victory. Virginia fell to 5-10 on the season with the loss.
Bradley returns to action Sunday, March 13 against Rider at the Rebel Spring Games in Osceola, Fla. at 9:40 a.m. (CST).
