Box Score OSCEOLA, Fla. -- Freshman Trisha Kowalewski extended her hitting streak to 11 games and junior Joanna Pettit continued her hot hitting, going 3-for-4 with two RBI, but IUPUI rallied from a 4-2 deficit to defeat the Bradley softball team 12-6 in the Braves final contest at the Rebel Spring Games in Osceola, Fla., Wednesday afternoon. Bradley fell to 6-7 on the season and concluded the Florida trip with a 4-3 record.
Junior pitcher Brittany Dehler started out strong for the Braves, retiring the first nine batters she faced. She also had the lead after the Braves scored the game's first run when Pettit smacked an RBI double that plated senior Brittany Mynsberge in the bottom of the third inning.
Dehler ran into a little trouble in the top of the fourth, giving up three singles, but a double play and a groundout helped her escape the inning unscathed.
Bradley tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out two-run double by sophomore Christine Cooney that scored freshman Stephanie Ramsey and junior Kimberly Dobill to give the Braves a 3-0 lead.
IUPUI's Blair Branson got the Jaguars on the board in the top of the fifth inning when she belted a home run with a runner on to cut Bradley's lead to 3-2.
Pettit drove in her team-leading 14th run of the season in the bottom of the fifth inning when she led off the inning with her third home run of the season to give the Braves a two-run cushion at 4-2.
Freshman Rebecca Bishop relieved Dehler in the circle for Bradley in the top of the sixth inning and IUPUI bats started to heat up after the slow start. Whitnie Darvell led off with a single and stole second. Darvell moved to third on a passed ball and Jenna Crockett walked and stole second to put runners at second and third with no outs. After a strikeout for the first out of the inning, Devan Craig singled to tie the game at 4-4 as both Darvell and Crockett scored.
A throwing error on the next play put runners on first and second with one out. Another IUPUI strikeout was followed by a two-out triple by Amanda Bowman as the Jaguars grabbed a 6-4 advantage.
IUPUI's Craig retired Bradley in order in the sixth and the Jaguars plated six runs on five hits in the top half of the seventh inning to extend the lead to 12-4. The Jaguars had four singles, a double and six stolen bases in the inning, while the Braves added to the damage with one error and a passed ball in the inning.
Mynsberge led off the bottom of the seventh for the Braves with her third double of the season to tie Julie Jehle for fourth all-time at Bradley with 28 career doubles. Pettit followed with a single, as she collected her 11th hit in her last 15 at bats. Kowalewski drew a base on balls to load the bases, before senior Angie Toures knocked Mynsberge in from third when she hit into a fielder's choice. Freshman Jessie Musgrove had a pinch hit single to score Kowalewski from second base and cut the deficit to 12-6. The Braves were unable to push another run across, however, as IUPUI improved to 4-6 on the season with the victory.
Dehler gave up two runs and five hits, while fanning four batters in her sixth start of the season. Dehler became the eighth player in program history to record 200 career strikeouts and needs five strikeouts to pass Sandra Britt for seventh place. Bishop suffered the loss for the Braves, falling to 2-4 on the year.
Bradley opens Missouri Valley Conference play this weekend at Illinois State. The Braves and Redbirds are scheduled to play a doubleheader at noon on Saturday in Normal, Ill., and will conclude the series Sunday with a single game at noon.
