Box Score 2 PEORIA, Ill. -- Bradley collected 22 hits and scored 14 runs to end a seven game losing streak as the Braves swept a non-conference doubleheader from Eastern Illinois Tuesday, defeating the Panthers 6-1 and 8-3 in Charleston, Ill. The Braves improved to 14-29 on the season with the two wins.
The Braves had hit a combined .145 in the last four games entering Tuesday's doubleheader against Eastern Illinois, but went 22-for-62 on the day and belted out seven doubles, one triple and one home run in Bradley's first games against the Panthers since the 1999 season.
Junior Brittany Dehler scattered four hits and gave up one unearned run in the opener, improving to 9-15 overall with the victory. Freshman Trisha Kowalewski put the Braves on the board early with a one-out solo home run in the first inning. The homer was Kowalewski's team-leading seventh of the season and is one short of tying the Bradley season record of eight.
Eastern Illinois tied the game in the third inning thanks in part to one of the Braves four errors in the game, but the Braves scored a pair of runs in the sixth inning to take a 3-1 lead. Junior Joanna Pettit scored on a bunt by Sarah Mancuso and sophomore Christine Cooney knocked in sophomore Elizabeth Wilson from third base with a two-out double to center field.
Senior Brittany Mynsberge plated a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning when she ripped a double down the left field line that scored Molly Bergeson and Kowalewski to give Bradley a 5-1 lead. Junior Shayna Bradford capped the scoring with a one-out single up the middle that scored Mynsberge from second base to put the Braves ahead 6-1.
After totalling nine hits in the opener, the Braves bats continued to stay hot in the nightcap as Bradley had a season-high 13 hits in the second contest. Bergeson earned the victory for Bradley in the circle, improving to 2-7, but her offense overshadowed a solid pitching performance as she went 4-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored in the nightcap.
Bergeson led off the game with a double and she quickly came around to score when Kowalewski followed with a single up the middle. Pettit hit a one-out single to left center that scored Kowalewski and Wilson belted a two-out double to right center to knock in the Braves third run in the frame as Bradley grabbed an early 3-0 lead.
Eastern Illinois scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single Sandy Short and a wild pitch with a pair of runners on led to the Panthers second run of the inning.
The Braves pushed three more runners across in the top of the second inning. Bradley had runners on first and second with no outs after singles by Stephanie Ramsey and Cooney. Bergeson had a bunt single and Ramsey came around to score on an Eastern Illinois error on the play. Mynsberge drove in her third run of the day with a ground ball to the right side of the infield that allowed Cooney to score from third and Pettit ripped a single to center field that plated Bergeson to extend the Braves lead to 6-2.
The Panthers got one run back in the top of the second inning. Brittany Castle drew a one-out walk and Jessica Irps hit a double to right field that knocked home Castle. Bergeson would settle down, however, and give up just one hit in her final five innings of work and Eastern Illinois was unable to push another run across. Freshman Rebecca Bishop pitched a scoreless seventh inning in relief of Bergeson, retiring the Panthers in order.
Bradley added one run in both the fourth and sixth innings. Cooney hit a triple to lead off the fourth inning and Bergeson legged out an infield single, but Cooney held at third base. Mynsberge drove in her fourth run of the day with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Cooney and improved Mynsberge's career RBI total to 99. Bergeson doubled down the left field line with two outs in the sixth and Kowalewski singled up the middle to score Bergeson for the fourth time in the doubleheader.
Bradley closes out the non-conference portion of the schedule Wednesday when the Braves host Loyola-Chicago in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Laura Bradley Park.
