St. Louis, Mo. ? Bradley's top doubles team of Sr. Ashley Morris and Jr. Elise Montrose made a run through the Flight “A” doubles competition on the second day of the Billiken Classic before being derailed by injury.
The Braves' tandem made quick work of their first foe of the day by jumping to a 4-0 lead on Southeast Missouri State's #2 doubles team before advancing via default. Morris and Montrose then took an 8-5 decision over MVC rival Illinois State's #2 side to advance to the semi-finals of Flight “A.” The home-team Billikens were the beneficiary of a walkover into the finals when the Braves decided to rest a mild wrist injury suffered by Elise Montrose in singles play.
In other doubles action for the Braves, Fr. Kim Braun and Jr. Teri Chan hung within one break of serve of Western Illinois top team, falling 8-6 in the opening round. Sophomore Katie Bowen and Fr. Erin Krubeck dropped their season-opener to St. Louis University's #2 pair, 8-2.
The conclusion of the singles competition saw Elise Montrose advance to consolation finals in Flight “A” before the previously mentioned wrist injury forced her to retire while trailing, 0-3, in the first set to SEMO's Drew Krystal. Montrose advanced to the consolation title match with a hard fought super-tie-breaker win at 10-8 over Veronique Park-Bedard of Illinois State. Montrose finished the Billiken Classic with an overall singles mark of 2-2.
Senior Ashley Morris finished up the event with a 2-1 overall mark after winning both Friday matches before dropping Saturday's Flight “A” semi-final match to SLU's Katrina Lozanova, 7-5, 6-0.
The Braves will return to the courts next Saturday, September 17, when they host the Bradley Invitational at the David Markin Tennis Courts in the southwest corner of campus.
