SPRINGFIELD, Mo. ? Bradley junior forward Zach Bell continued his hot start to the season, scoring what proved to be the game-winning goal early in the first half and adding an assist, as the Braves (3-1) cruised to a 3-0 victory versus Centenary (0-4) Saturday evening at the Missouri State Classic.
Bell scored Bradley's first goal in the 14th minute, finishing off the double-assist play by sophomore forwards Teddy Anderson and Nick Mentgen. Bell then helped the Braves build a 2-0 halftime lead by setting up Mentgen's first goal of the season in the 24th minute. With his offensive work in the first half, Bell improved his season production to two goals and four assists, meaning he had contributed to each of Bradley's first six goals of the year.
That trend ended in the second half when senior forward Kevin Erickson headed home a Drew DeGurian long throw in the 60th minute for the final 3-0 margin.
Bradley limited Centenary to just eight total shots and preseason All-American Chris Dunsheath stopped the only two shots on goals for his third shutout in the season's first four games, while improving his school record to 19.5 career shutouts. Dunsheath also pulled within one win of tying Adam Gross' career school record of 39 career goalkeeping victories.
By sweeping its two games at the Missouri State Classic, Bradley ran its unbeaten streak away from home to eight games (6-0-2), dating back to a 4-3 loss to Central Connecticut State Sept. 26, 2004 at the Dartmouth adidas/Hypertherm Classic. The Braves will face a stiff challenge to that streak Tuesday afternoon when they visit defending Horizon League champion Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Bradley will return home next weekend to host the third annual Bradley Classic Sept. 16-17 at Shea Stadium. Missouri State will play the 5 p.m. games both days, while the Braves will face IPFW in Friday's 7:30 contest and UC Irvine in Saturday's tournament finale.
