PEORIA, Ill. -- Home cooking was all the Bradley Volleyball team needed, apparently, as the Braves posted a 3-1 victory against Oakland Friday afternoon to earn their first victory of the season. Game scores in favor of Bradley were 30-22, 24-30, 30-26, 30-18.
After opening the season with five consecutive matches on the road and five straight loses, the Braves returned to Peoria to host the Radisson Hotel Invitational at Robertson Memorial Field House Friday and Saturday and opened tournament play with a 3-1 victory against the visiting Golden Grizzlies.
Senior Lindsay Stalzer led the way offensively with a match-high 20 kills and also added eight block assists as she moved past Laura Benzing into fourth place on the Braves career block assists list. Junior Briony Hammet helped highlight a solid defensive effort with a team-best 10 digs off the bench to go along with seven kills and two aces, while senior Ashley Vance had 43 assists, two aces and seven digs.
Junior Amber DeBroux notched a career-high with six blocks and also had an efficient afternoon offensively, totalling seven kills with no hitting errors for a .389 hitting percentage. Freshman Katrina Goncher also provided spark on offense, collecting seven kills on 10 attacks.
Bradley (1-5) boasted a .263 hitting percentage on the afternoon and held a 13-6.5 edge in blocks. Oakland fell to 1-7 overall with the loss.
The Braves return to action later Friday evening against Southeast Missouri State. In earlier action at the Radisson Hotel Invitational Northern Illinois was a three-game winner against Oakland (30-21, 30-20, 30-21) and Southeast Missouri State downed Belmont (31-29, 30-27, 29-31, 30-23).
