PEORIA, Ill. -- Junior Amy Peters scored a game-high 18 points, and Bradley committed a season-low 11 turnovers as the Braves held off a late Illinois State rally attempt to pick up their first conference win of the season with a 71-63 victory Sunday in women's basketball action Sunday at Robertson Memorial Field House.
Bradley (5-10 overall, 1-5 MVC) held a 38-26 lead at halftime after turning the ball over just four times in the opening 20 minutes and shooting 42 percent from the field. The Braves extended the lead to as many as 19 points (53-34) with 12:12 remaining before Illinois State rallied to make it a two possession game.
Illinois State (5-9 overall, 0-5 MVC) scored six straight points to open a 17-2 Redbird run that pulled ISU to within 55-51 with just over six minutes remaining. Sophomore Devyn Flanagan ended the Illinois State run with a three-pointer and another basket to push Bradley's lead back to nine points (60-51) with 3:37 to play.
The Redbirds got back to within five points (60-55) with 2:32 to go, but Bradley made 11 of 14 free throw attempts in the final 2:15 of action to hold off Illinois State and end a five-game losing streak with the 71-63 victory.
Bradley had three players reach double figures with Peters netting a game-high 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Flanagan finished with 16 points on the day, while junior Jen Brown was also in double figures with 11 points as she connected on 3-of-5 three-point attempts. Brown also added five assists to become the eighth player in program history with 300 career assists.
The Braves entered the game shooting 59 percent from the free throw line in conference play, but made 23-of-28 attempts (82.1 percent) and also posted a season-low 11 turnovers against the Redbirds. Bradley owned a 17-8 edge in points off turnovers and held a solid edge on the glass outrebounding Illinois State 38-32 while also posting an 18-8 advantage in second chance points.
Freshman Kelly Krumwiede nearly finished with her second consecutive double-double, finishing the day with nine points and 12 rebounds. Krumwiede snagged seven of the Braves 16 offensive rebounds and also added three assists and three steals.
Illinois State had four players reach double figures in scoring with freshman Kristi Cirone leading the way with 17 points. Amber Shelton and Holly Hallstrom both added 12 points and Megan McCracken chipped in 11 points off the bench.
Bradley opens a three-game Valley road swing next week, when the Braves face Northern Iowa, Saturday at 4:05 p.m. in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
