OMAHA, Neb. ? Veteran Bradley men's basketball play-by-play man Dave Snell missed his first Braves broadcast in 27 years Wednesday when he had to be taken to the hospital less than an hour before tipoff of Bradley's Missouri Valley Conference game at Creighton Wednesday night.
Snell was complaining of possible food poisoning upon arriving at Qwest Center OMAHA. After completing his pregame interviews and sitting at his broadcast position shortly after the start of the hour-long studio pregame show, he briefly passed out. Snell received immediate medical attention from Qwest Center staff and was taken by ambulance to the emergency room at the nearby Creighton University Medical Center, where he was later admitted. As of 12:30 Thursday morning, Snell was reported to be in fair condition.
Snell became the “Voice of the Braves” to start the 1979-80 season and he had called the action on Peoria station WMBD AM 1470 for 794 consecutive games before Wednesday's contest.
Former Bradley All-American player Roger Phegley, who had traveled with a group of boosters for the game, took Snell's place during Wednesday's broadcast. Phegley, who played six seasons in the NBA after scoring 2,064 points for the Braves from 1974 to 1978, had previously worked as the color analyst for WEEK-TV telecasts of Bradley Basketball several years ago.
Snell's condition will be updated Thursday. Fans wishing to send him a note, may email their message to Bradley Assistant A.D. for Communications Bobby Parker at bparker@bradley.edu.
