Omaha, Neb. ? The Bradley Braves wrapped up play at the 2006 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships on Sunday with rival Drake taking four titles and two runner-ups.
Senior Teri Chan (Gunree, Ill./Warren) powered her way past Evansville's Beth Peyton for a seventh-place in #3 singles. After taking the first set 6-0, Peyton made the second set harder for Chan, edging Peyton 7-5 in the second set for the match and seventh-place. She also recorded her 62nd career victory, adding to an impressive singles career. In doubles, Chan and partner Kim Braun lost a heart-breaker to Creighton's Thurston/Erickson combo, 9-7. The duo walks away with an eighth-place finish for #2 doubles.
Sophomores Kim Braun (Racine, Wisc./The Prairie School) and Erin Krubeck (Boulder, Colo. /Fairview) took home fourth-place finishes in their respective flights. Braun took Drake's Sarah Plowman to a first set tie break, only to fall 7-6 (1). Braun could not regain momentum, losing 6-4 in the second set, for a fourth-place in #6 singles. Krubeck was beaten in the first set by UNI's Samantha Schnobel, 6-2. Krubeck was determined to take the second set, but faltered 7-5 in a tight match, giving her a fourth-place in #7 singles.
Freshmen Emily Regenold (Cincinnati, Ohio /Princeton), Jessica Buterbaugh (Paradise Valley, Ariz./Chaparral) and Kelly Donohue (Louisville, Ky. /Sacred Heart Academy) took sixth-place finishes in their respective flights. Regenold fell to Wichita State's Anna Egorova, 6-1, 6-1 in #2 singles. Buterbaugh dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision to UNI's Caroline Hannes in #5 singles. Donohue dropped the first set 6-0 to Illinois State's Carolyne Parent in #4 singles. Donohue fought back taking the second set to a tie-break, but came up short, falling 7-6 (3).
In #3 doubles, teammates Erin Krubeck and Emily Regenold powered past Creighton's Yanagida/Yoneshige combo, 8-3 giving them a fifth-place finish in #3 doubles.
Senior Elise Montrose (Portland, Ore. /Sunset) was defeated by Drake's Veronika Lesayova, 6-3, 6-4. Montrose ended taking eighth-place in #1 singles. Montrose and teammate Kelly Donohue loss to UNI's Pukse/Kanade duo, 8-3, giving them an eighth-place finish in #1 doubles.
The Braves will take a few weeks off to prepare for the ITA Regionals in East Lansing, Mich. on Oct. 19-23.
