Jen Brown and
Ashley Chelleen both tied for game high honors with 19 points and paced four Braves in double figures as the Bradley women's basketball team got back in the win column with a 90-77 victory over instate foe Western Illinois Monday night at Robertson Memorial Field House. The victory evened the Braves record at 2-2, while dropping Western Illinois to 1-2 on the young season.
The Braves led 44-38 at the break and stretched the lead to as many as 16 points in the second half before cruising to the 90-77 win over the Westerwinds. The 90 points is the highest scoring output for the Braves since defeating Loyola 95-66 on Dec. 4, 2004.
Chelleen scored six points during a 14-3 Braves run that gave Bradley a 24-13 lead with 8:48 to play in the first half. Brown capped the run with one of Bradley's five first-half three-pointers as she and Chelleen both scored 13 points in the opening half of play.
Western Illinois countered with a 12-6 spurt to pull to within five points at 30-25 with 4:57 and eventually cut the Braves lead to one point at 34-33 with just under three minutes before the break. Brown hit a three-pointer and followed that with a steal and breakaway layup to spark a 10-5 BU spurt that gave the Braves a 44-38 lead at the half.
Both teams shot well in the first half with Western Illinois hitting 12-of-22 shots (54.5 percent) in the opening 20 minutes and Bradley shooting 48.6 percent, including 50 percent (5-for-10) from beyond the three-point arc. Turnovers plagued both squads, however, with both teams committing 13 turnovers in the first half.
Bradley tightened up the defense in the second half, limiting the Westerwinds to 41.4 percent shooting in the period, while shooting 52 percent from the floor as a squad. The Braves shot 50 percent from the field on the night and hit 9-of-20 three-point attempts. Bradley also dominated the glass, owning a 37-25 edge in rebounding and 20-7 advantage in second chance points.
Chelleen scored 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting and added eight rebounds, two assists and three blocked shots in just 20 minutes of action. She moved into 26th place on Bradley's career scoring list, passing Dawn Cartwright (666 points), and now has 673 points. Chelleen also took over sixth place on the Braves career blocks list recording her 54th block to pass Karin Nicholls' career total of 53.
Brown was almost equally efficient on the offensive end, collecting 19 points on just 7-of-11 shooting, including four three-pointers. She also added five assists and three steals and moved into third place on BU's career assist chart, overtaking Andrea McAllister (360 assists), as she improved her career total to 363 assists.
Joining Brown and Chelleen in double figures, were sophomore Kelly Krumwiede (16 points, 10 rebounds) and junior Devyn Flanagan (11 points). Krumwiede hit 4-of-5 from the field and 8-of-10 free throw attempts, while also grabbing 10 boards for her second career double-double. Flanagan snagged a game-high four steals to go along with her 11 points.
Western Illinois also had four players in double figures with Peoria native Stephanie Lovingood leading the Westerwinds with 14 points. Deedee Murphy added 13 points and four assists to help pace Western Illinois.
Bradley returns to action Friday at the Hoops for the Cure Classic in Dallas, Texas. The Braves will open tournament play against tournament-host SMU Friday at 7:05 p.m. Audio streams from both of Bradley's games in Dallas will be available on the internet at www.bubraves.com
