Peoria, Ill. ? The women's netters secured the doubles point in 25 minutes and never looked back on Saturday as they stopped Chicago State, 6-1, in the season opener at the Clubs at River City.
Junior Teri Chan (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) and freshman Kim Braun (Racine, Wis./The Prairie School) hit the court just after 1 p.m., broke serve, and finished before the bottom of the hour in a dominating, 8-0, win over CSU's Samantha Islas and Erica Watkins at No. 2 doubles.
It wasn't nearly as easy in the No. 1 doubles slot as junior Elise Montrose (Portland, Ore./Sunset) and senior Ashley Morris (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) needed a tiebreaker to top the Cougars' Cristina Vlase and Yosefin Rustandar, 9-8 (8).
With Morris battling injury and Chicago State making clutch shots, the Braves top pair found themselves trailing, 4-7, and facing the first of two CSU match points on their own serve.
Montrose eventually held and the Braves got back on serve in the next game before forcing the tiebreaker. In the back-and-forth tiebreaker, Bradley trailed 7-8 before reeling off the final three points to earn the win and sweep the doubles competition.
Chicago State proved to be no match in singles play with the Braves posting three shutout victories and yielding just one game in another.
Kim Braun started the victory parade in a 6-0, 6-0, half-hour match against Ulanda Fulford at No. 4 singles.
Next off was Teri Chan at No. 3 after cruising 6-0, 6-0, over Samantha Islas. Erin Krubeck (Boulder, Colo./Fairview) posted an identical 6-0, 6-0 win over Erica Watkins at No. 5.
Elise Montrose surrendered just one game at the top singles position in an uneventful, 6-1, 6-0 match over Cristina Vlase.
The Braves allowed the lone CSU point as Ashley Morris defaulted out with the team victory in hand.
Next weekend the Braves (1-0) travel to Toledo, Ohio to take on Bowling Green and Toledo on Saturday and Sunday.
