TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Freshman Ashley Birdsong picked up her third victory of the season, throwing a two-hit complete-game shutout and senior Bethany Till went 2-for-4 with two RBI to help lead Bradley to a 3-0 victory against Appalachian State Tuesday afternoon at the Lady Rattlers Complex in Tallahassee, Fla.
Birdsong evened her record on the season at 3-3, giving up just two hits and three walks, while striking out six in a complete game victory against the Mountaineers. The shutout was Bradley's fifth of the season surpassing last year's team season total of four and improved the Braves record to 9-7.
Bradley scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning. Freshman Alycia Bachkora reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Bachkora came around to score on a two-out RBI-double by Stephanie Ramsey to give the Braves a 1-0 lead.
The Braves tacked on an insurance run in the fourth inning. Senior Kimberly Dobill got things started with a two-out single and Ramsey was hit by a pitch, before Molly Bergeson drew a walk to load the bases. Till knocked in Dobill from third with a single, but Bradley held just a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth after leaving the bases loaded.
Birdsong pitched out of a jam in the fourth after Appalachian State had runners on second and third with one out. She induced a groundout and flyout, however, to end the threat.
Till drove in another run in the Braves half of the sixth inning. Molly Bergeson had a two-out single and stole second, before Till notched her second RBI of the afternoon with a single that plated Bergeson from second, giving Bradley a 3-0 lead.
Appalachian State had just two batters reach base and failed to get a hit in the final three innings after leaving a pair of runners in scoring position in the fourth inning, as Birdsong retired 11 of the final 13 batters she faced.
Bradley closes out its spring break trip to Florida later today against Florida A&M.
