WICHITA, Kan. -- Bradley scored eight runs in the top of the fifth inning to post a 15-3 five-inning victory over Wichita State Sunday to conclude the three game conference opening series against the Shockers. The third game of the series was cancelled due to inclement weather in the Wichita area.
The Braves (10-9 overall, 1-1 MVC) took an early 1-0 lead, scoring one run in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Trish Kowalewski put the Braves on top with a one-out single through the right side of the infield that scored senior Bethany Till.
Wichita State (19-10 overall, 1-1 MVC) quickly tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double by Katie McGeeney that scored Erin Peters from first base.
The Shockers added two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-1 lead. Wichita State drew a pair of walks to lead off the inning, before McGeeney ripped a two-out double to left field that scored Stephanie De La Riva and Brooke Usher.
Bradley plated five runs in the top of the third inning to take a 6-3 lead. Till got things started with a two-out double to right center. Kowalewski followed with an infield single and Emily Bergeson smacked a single to center field to score Till from third base. Senior Joanna Pettit loaded the bases with a single and junior Elizabeth Wilson drew a walk with the bases loaded to tie the game at 3-3. Senior Kimberly Dobill delivered the big blow of the inning with a two-out three-run double to center field, giving the Braves a 6-3 lead.
The Braves added a run in the fourth on a two-out single to right field off the bat of Kowalewski that scored Stephanie Ramsey from second base.
Bradley put the game out of reach scoring eight runs in the top of the fifth inning to post a 15-3 victory over the Shockers. Ramsey belted a two-run double to right center and Kowalewski had a two-run bases-loaded single in the inning. Freshman Emily Bergeson also drove in a run with a double to center and Pettit capped off the inning with a three-run homer as the Braves scored eight runs on only five hits in the frame.
The 15 runs scored were the most by the Braves since a 20-0 victory against Jackson State on Feb. 8, 2004, and are the most Bradley has ever scored in a Missouri Valley Conference game. Freshman Ashley Birdsong struck out seven and walked five, as she improved to 4-3 on the season with the victory.
Bradley returns to action Thursday when the Braves play a doubleheader at Butler at 2 p.m.
