Box Score Peoria, Ill. ? Senior right-hander Brandon Magee (Sheboygan, Wis./North) tossed his second complete-game shutout in his last three outings as the Braves blanked visiting Indiana State, 7-0, and took their third series opener in as many MVC series Friday evening at O'Brien Field.
Magee was superb, retiring the Sycamores in order in five separate innings and allowing just one runner to see a pitch while occupying second base. The Bradley ace struck out nine and walked just one in improving to 5-1 on the season, 3-0 in conference play, and dropping his ERA in Valley games to a sparkling 0.69.
Magee has allowed just two earned runs in 26 innings against MVC competition while striking out a league-best 26 hitters, holding opponents to a .192 batting average and hurling two complete game shutouts.
The Bradley offense was solid and efficient all night, scoring seven runs on just eight hits. The Braves executed well with four sacrifice hits, including sacrifice flies from Brad Jones (Potomac, Md./Landon School) and Paul Rice (Beardstown, Ill./Beardstown).
Freshman Dan Brewer (Brookfield, Ill./Lyons Township), playing for the first time against his older brother and Indiana State leadoff man Tim, was once again the hitting star for the Braves with a 2-for-3 effort with two runs scored. Brewer is now hitting a team-best .405.
The win moves the Bradley record to 12-14 on the year and pushes their MVC record to 5-2.
The action resumes on Saturday at 1 p.m. as game two of the series gets underway at O'Brien Field.
