Box Score EVANSVILLE, Ind. ? Evansville walked into its first Missouri Valley Conference regular-season baseball championship by completing a three-game sweep versus Bradley (24-29, 11-12) with a 4-1 victory Saturday at Braun Stadium.
The Purple Aces (36-19, 16-8) scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, thanks to a leadoff double by Kasey Wahl and three consecutive one-out walks. Bradley starter Collin Walker (1-7) intentionally walked Pat Tumilty, then gave up his second free pass of the game to Robbie Minor to load the bases. Senior lefty Peter Elmer relieved Walker and promptly walked pinch-hitter Jeff Zelenovic, giving the Purple Aces a 2-1 lead. Freshman Rob Scahill immediately relieved Elmer and got the inning-ending double play the Braves were looking for.
Bradley took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Pat Ryerson singled, stole second and scored on Ryan Curry's 12th double of the season. The Braves got only one more runner into scoring position the rest of the game, however.
After sitting atop the Valley standings for the first five weeks of the season, Bradley will limp into next week's ConAgra Foods MVC Tournament as the No. 6 seed. The Braves, who have lost 14 of their last 19 games, will see Evansville again in Wednesday's first round at Wichita State's Eck Stadium. The host Shockers will play the 7 p.m. game Wednesday and the remainder of the schedule will be adjusted accordingly. The start time for the Bradley-Evansville game will be announced later this evening.
