Volleyball Downs Albany For First Win

PEORIA, Ill. -- Senior Amber DeBroux had a career high 23 kills and senior Kelly Niemeyer and junior Nikki Pierzchala both added double-doubles to help lead Bradley to a 30-28, 20-30, 30-28, 31-29 victory against defending America East Conference regular-season champion Albany Saturday afternoon at the Mortar Board Premier in West Lafayette, Ind.

Bradley (1-2 overall) trailed 28-27 in each of the three games it won, rallying late to pull out victories in games one, three and four. DeBroux tallied a career-best and match 23 kills and hit .488 for the match to pace all player offensively, as she was one of four Bradley players to reach double figures in kills.

Pierzchala posted her fifth career double-double and first since Sept. 23, 2005, finishing with 14 kills and 16 digs. Niemeyer was named to the all-tournament team after recording her second consecutive double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs to go along with two service aces. Junior Jenna Harrison also reached double figures in kills for the first time this season, notching 10 kills and attacking at a .474 clip.

The Braves served up a season-best nine aces, with sophomore Sam Black posting a career-best three aces. Black also tied junior Eileen Hillary for team-high honors with 26 assists.

Bradley hit .294 for the match, compared to .265 for the Great Danes, who dropped to 0-3 on the season. The Braves also owned a 64-51 edge in digs in a match that featured 35 ties and 12 lead changes.

Ashley Crenshaw led Albany with 22 kills, while Shelby Goldman and Ashley DeNeal both reached double figures with 18 and 15 kills, respectively.

Bradley returns to action next weekend when the Braves host the Radisson Hotel Invitational at Robertson Memorial Field House. Action begins Friday at 4:30 p.m. with Austin Peay taking on Cincinnati and will be followed by Bradley and Western Illinois at 7 p.m.
