PEORIA, Ill. -- Northern Iowa's Danielle Brazda and Ashten Stelken combined for 22 kills and 19 block assists, helping the Panthers dominate play at the net and sweep Bradley 30-22, 30-24, 30-20 in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both teams Saturday at Robertson Memorial Field House.
Bradley (3-7 overall, 0-1 MVC) hit .096 against the Panthers in the match, as UNI held a 15-9 edge in blocks on the night and hit .234 as a team. Senior Amber DeBroux led the Braves with 15 kills and added 10 digs for her second double-double of the season and the third of her career. Sophomore setter Sam Black also added a double-double with 20 assists and 11 digs in the loss. Senior Kelly Niemeyer was the only other player besides DeBroux to tally more than four kills, finishing with 10 kills and eight digs.
Northern Iowa (8-5 overall, 1-0 MVC) improved its hitting percentage in each of the three games, closing out the evening with a .316 attack percentage in the final game. In addition to the solid offensive performance, the Panthers also posted seven of their 15 blocks in the third and final game.
Stelken paced Northern Iowa with 13 kills and attacked at a .556 clip while adding eight block assists. Laura Rowen chipped in with 11 kills, 10 digs and five block assists, while Brazda came up just short of a double-double with nine kills and 11 block assists. Stephanie May also helped highlight the UNI defensive efforts with a match-high 22 digs helping the Panthers post a 65-56 edge in digs.
Bradley returns to action Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Southeast Missouri State.
