Omaha, Neb. ? Sophomore Kim Braun (Racine, Wisc./The Prairie School) highlighted first day action at the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships in Omaha, Neb., Friday, picking up the only singles victory for the Bradley Women's Tennis team.
Playing at #6 singles, Braun picked up the only singles win of the day for the Braves, posting a 6-3, 6-3 decision against Evansville's Susan Elliot. In #2 doubles, Braun and teammate Teri Chan were defeated by Wichita State's Browning/Richey combo, 8-1.
Seniors Teri Chan (Gunree, Ill./Warren) and Elise Montrose (Portland, Ore. /Sunset) took their opponents to first set tie-breaks. Chan battled Drake's Eveline Rusdianto in #3 singles action, losing a heart-breaker 7-6 (1), 7-5. Chan will face Wichita's Torrie Browning in the #3 singles back draw semifinals. Montrose also took UNI's Meghana Paritala to a first set tie-break, falling 7-6 (1), 6-2. Montrose will face Creighton's Katie Chiu in the #1 singles back draw semifinals.
Freshman Kelly Donohue (Louisville, Ky. /Sacred Heart Academy) lost her #4 singles match to Northern Iowa's Taynara Moraes, 6-2, 6-3. She will face off against Lindsey Erickson (CU) in the #4 singles back draw semifinals. In #1 doubles, Donohue and Montrose fell to Evansville's Brown/Peyton duo, 8-4.
Freshmen Emily Regenold (Cincinnati, Ohio /Princeton) and Jessica Buterbaugh (Paradise Valley, Ariz./Chaparral) lost in their singles matches. Regenold fell to Drake's Irina Kalashnikova 7-5, 6-3. Regenold will face Creighton's Nicole Thurston in #2 singles back draw semifinals. Buterbaugh fell to Indiana State's Marie Caujolle 7-6 (2), 7-6 (3). Buterbaugh fought throughout the entire match, but came up short of a victory. She will face Evansville's Stephanie Millis in the #5 singles back draw semifinals.
Semifinal action of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Women's Tennis Individual Championship will begin tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. with doubles action followed by singles action after noon. Braun will be playing Northern Iowa's Mariana Muraca in the semifinals of #6 singles and sophomore Erin Krubeck (Boulder, Colo. /Fairview) will face Drake's Daria Zwaislak in the #7 semis to highlight Saturday's scheduled matches for the Braves.
