TUCSON, Ariz. -- Senior Kelly Niemeyer tied for match-high honors with 16 kills and fellow senior Amber DeBroux added 14 kills, but the Braves were unable to pull off the upset falling to 21st-ranked Arizona Friday morning during first day action at the Four Points Sheraton Wildcat Classic in Tucson, Ariz. Game scores in favor of Arizona were 30-28, 30-24, 30-28.
Bradley (3-4 overall) pulled to within one point in game one at 18-17, before the Wildcats used a 6-0 run to take a 24-17 lead. The Braves scored four of the next five points to pull back to within four points at 25-21. Arizona held a 28-23 lead, before four consecutive Wildcat attack errors and a kill by junior Jenna Harrison on an overpass knotted the game at 28-28. Arizona was able to pull out the 30-28 victory, however, getting a kill on a Bradley overpass and a Braves attack error, as the Wildcats took a 1-0 lead.
Senior Amber DeBroux tied game two at 23-23 with one of her seven game two kills, but Arizona scored four consecutive points to open a 7-1 run as Arizona put away game two with a 30-24 victory.
Game three saw the Braves take a 22-17 lead on a DeBroux kill, but Arizona scored four straight points to open a 7-1 run that saw the Wildcats take a 24-23 lead. The Braves tied the game at 27-27, before Arizona closed out the match with a pair of kills and a service ace to sweep the match with a 30-28 win. Senior Kelly Niemeyer recorded seven of her match-high 16 kills and a service ace in game three.
Arizona (6-1 overall) owned a .234 hitting percentage and owned a 50-37 edge in digs and 10-5 advantage in blocks against the Braves. The Wildcats had three players reach double figures in kills with Brooke Buringrud posting a double-double with 16 kills and 11 digs. Dominique Lamb added 15 kills and eight blocks (two solo, six block assists), while Whitney Dosty chipped in with 13 kills.
Bradley continues play at the Wildcat Classic Saturday with a pair of matches. The Braves will face Rice at noon (CST) and Montana State at 6:30 p.m. (CST).
