Preseason Missouri Valley Conference favorite Northern Iowa continued its current hot streak, hitting .376 as a team to sweep Bradley, 30-20, 30-15, 30-18 in Valley volleyball action Saturday afternoon at Robertson Memorial Field House. Shannon Aschoff led four UNI players in double figures in kills with a match-high 14, while freshman Melissa Collins (Manchester, Mo./Parkway South) led the Braves with nine kills.
Bradley (2-23 overall, 1-11 MVC) hit just .110 in the match and had just two players record more than five kills, paced by Collins' nine kills. Senior Jenna Harrison (Edwardsville, Ill./Metro East Lutheran) added seven kills and hit .238 for the match.
Aschoff tallied 14 kills on just 20 swings and hit .550 for the match to lead UNI (15-9 overall, 9-3 MVC), which won its season-best sixth consecutive match. Ashten Stelken added 12 kills and attacked at a .480 clip and Laura Rowen notched 11 kills and hit .423 on the afternoon. Danielle Brazda was also in double figures with 10 kills and hit .529 as the quartet combined for 47 of the Panthers 58 kills and hit a combined .489. In addition to a 58-36 edge in kills, UNI also boasted a 66-49 advantage in digs and outblocked the Braves 10 to two.
UNI led from start to finish in the first game, but took control of a one-point game with an 8-1 run to take a 22-14 lead and cruise to a 30-20 win. Bradley hit .143 in the opening game compared to .382 for the Panthers. UNI also recorded five of its 10 blocks in the opener.
The Braves struggled offensively in the second set, hitting .022 as a team. The Panthers took control of the game early, scoring 10 consecutive points to take a commanding 13-3 lead. Rowen led UNI in game two with six kills and six digs to help the Panthers to a 30-15 victory.
UNI used a potent offense in the third game to close out the match with a 30-18 win. The Panthers hit .400 in the final game and limited Bradley to a .167 attack percentage in the frame. Aschoff took control of the game, finding the floor with nine kills in the third game to help UNI register an impressive 24 kills. She helped cap a 9-1 UNI run with three kills and a block assist that gave the Panthers a 23-11 lead. Aschoff would help UNI lock up the win with two more kills as the Panthers completed the road sweep.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Comiskey (Crystal Lake, Ill./South) led Bradley with 14 digs. Junior setter Sam Black (Atalissa, Iowa/West Liberty) added 30 assists and eight digs in the loss.
Bradley closes out a three-match homestand Friday against Indiana State at 7 p.m. at Robertson Memorial Field House.
