KAILUA-KONA, Hawai'i - Senior Ryan Curry (Downers Grove, Ill./South) had three hits to help led the Bradley baseball team Saturday, as the Braves collected 14 hits en route to a 9-7 victory against Hawai'i-Hilo in the first game of a seven-game series at Simmon's Field in Kailuna-Kona, Hawai'i.
Sophomore Collin Brennan (Williamsville, Ill./Williamsville) scattered seven hits and struck out five in five innings of work in a no-decision.
Junior Chris Wright (Rochester, Ill. /Rochester) threw four innings of one-hit relief while striking out seven for his second win of the season.
Offensively, the Braves were led by Ryan Curry who went 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI. Dan Brewer (Brookfield, Ill./Lyons Township) went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two stolen bases, while senior Justin Carr (Camargo, Ill./Villa Grove) was 1-for-4 with a two-run double. Junior Ryan Eigsti (Eureka, Ill./Eureka) went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs batted-in to round up the offense.
Trailing 4-0 in the top of the fourth, senior Paul Rice (Beardstown, Ill./Beardstown) reached on a bunt. Brewer reached on a hit-by-pitch and then Curry hit a double to left-field, scoring Rice on the play. Carr scorched a two-run doubled to right-field, plating both Brewer and Curry. Eigsti hit an RBI double to right-field, tying the game at 4-4.
The Braves scored two in the top of the fifth off an error on a single by Eigsti. The Vulacans tied it at 6-6 with two solo-homeruns in bottom of the inning. The Braves scored the go ahead runs in the top of the seventh off of a wild pitch and an error by the Vulcans. Curry added an insurance run in the eighth inning with an RBI double, scoring Brewer for a 9-6 lead.
Bradley improved to 5-7 on the season with the win, while Hawai'i-Hilo falls to 5-18 on the spring.
The Braves will be back in action Sunday as they continue their series against University of Hawaii-Hilo baseball team with a double-header. First pitch against the Vulcans is slated for 4 p.m.
