PEORIA, Ill. ? Sophomore Ashley Birdsong struck out 12 and gave up just one unearned run, but Bradley managed just one hit and had five base runners as the Braves five-game win streak was snapped by Louisville's 1-0 victory in the first game of the Red and Black Cardinal Tournament in Louisville, Ky. Bradley fell to 7-2 on the season with the loss.
Louisville (5-7 overall) scored the only run of the game in the top of the fourth inning on a Bradley error. Courtney Moore had a one-out infield single and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt. It appeared Birdsong might get out of the inning unscathed, but a Bradley error on a ground ball off the bat of Brittany York allowed Moore to score the game's lone run.
Birdsong suffered her first loss of the season, falling to 5-1 on the year and had her streak of 11 consecutive victories snapped. She was one strikeout short of matching her career high, finishing the day with 12 strikeouts and no walks while lowering her season ERA to 0.71. Birdsong surrendered four hits in the complete game loss.
Junior Stephanie Ramsey got the Braves lone hit of the day off Louisville pitcher Catherine Bishop (3-5), who also struck out 12 batters on the day. Bradley had only one player reach base to lead off the inning, when junior Jessie Musgrove led off the seventh with a walk. Pinch runner Katy Dammer moved to second on a one-out sacrifice bunt, but Bishop notched her 12th strikeout of the day to end the Braves scoring threat.
Bradley returns to action at noon today when the Braves face Western Kentucky at the Red and Black Cardinal Tournament in Louisville, Ky.
