Bradley won on its last at bat for the second consecutive outing as
Christine Cooney drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Braves an 8-7 victory over Drake and help Bradley complete the series sweep of the Bulldogs Sunday afternoon at Laura Bradley Park.
The Braves (19-10 overall, 4-4) won their fifth consecutive game and sixth in the last seven outings, while Drake fell to 12-25 overall, 2-7 in MVC play with the loss.
Bradley held a 4-1 lead heading into the sixth inning and sophomore Ashley Birdsong appeared to be in line for her 16th victory of the year. Drake had other ideas, however, pushing five runs across in the top half of the inning to take a 6-4 lead. Drake loaded the bases with just one out when Marilyn Buss had an infield single. A Bradley error on the play allowed another run to score and Bradley led 4-3 with runners at first and third with one our. Lindsay Larry followed with a single through the left side of the infield to tie the game at 4-4. Jenna Wilkin put the Bulldogs in front with a single down the right field line that plated two to give Drake a 6-4 lead.
Bradley got one run back in the bottom half of the inning. Miriam Wegmann walked to start the inning and Trish Kowalewski followed with a single. After a sacrifice bunt, junior Jessie Musgrove was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out. Freshman Amanda Clack drove in one run with a ground ball to left side of the infield, as the Braves cut the Drake lead to 6-5.
Kristin Birocci led off the top of the seventh inning with a towering home run down the left field line, to give Drake a two-run cushion at 7-5. Clack relieved Birdsong with no outs in the seventh and gave up a single to the first batter she faced, but struck out the next two hitters and induced a groundout to end the inning.
Sophomore Katy Dammer helped spark a two-run seventh inning and Bradley nearly scored the game-winner with two outs in the seventh. Dammer led off the inning with a double to left center and Cooney followed with a single. Wegmann drew a one-out walk and Kowalewski knocked Dammer in with a sacrifice fly to right center that nearly found the gap. Senior Elizabeth Wilson tied the game with an RBI single to left field and an error on the play put runners at second and third with two outs. Musgrove was intentionally walked for the third time on the day to load the bases and Wegmann nearly scored the game-winning run on a pitch that sailed to the backstop, but was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
After pitching a scoreless eighth inning, Clack led off the bottom half of the inning with a single up the middle. Alycia Bachkora drew a walk and the second wild pitch of the inning put runners at second and third with no outs. Freshman Lauren Meister loaded the bases with a four-pitch walk and Cooney forced the game-winning run home with a bases-loaded walk.
Bradley improved to 5-0 on the year in extra-inning games. Clack picked up the victory, improving to 3-2 on the season as she struck out three and walked one in two innings of relief work. Clack also extended her hitting streak to a team-best six games, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored. Cooney went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI to also help highlight an 11-hit game for the Braves.
Bradley returns to action Wednesday when the Braves play a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Northern Iowa.
