The Bradley men's basketball team's third-round game in the South Padre Island Invitational Nov. 23 versus Iowa will tip at 6:30 p.m. and will be broadcast nationally on CSTV, according to information the school received today from the tournament organizers.
After hosting first-round tournament games at Carver Arena Nov. 18 versus Maryland-Eastern Shore and Nov. 20 against Florida Gulf Coast, Bradley will travel to South Padre Island, Texas, for the final two rounds in the event to be played Nov. 23-24 at the South Padre Island Convention Center. The Bradley-Iowa game Nov. 23 will be followed by Vanderbilt versus Utah State. The two evening losers will play in the 5 p.m. game Nov. 24, followed by the two winners in the 7:30 p.m. contest. While CSTV will televise the two evening games in the third round, none of the four championship round games Nov. 24 are slated for television coverage.
The third-round game against the Hawkeyes will be the 10th meeting in the all-time series between the Bradley and Iowa men's basketball programs. Iowa owns a 6-3 series edge, having won each of the last six meetings. The teams have not met since a 90-77 Iowa win Dec. 6, 1976 in Iowa City. In the only previous neutral-site matchup, Iowa prevailed, 90-73, Feb. 10, 1973 in Chicago.
Looking ahead to the final round, Bradley owns a 2-1 series advantage against Utah State, but is winless in two previous tries against Vanderbilt. After Bradley won the initial meeting Dec. 28, 1946 at the Peoria Armory, the Braves and Utah State split a home-and-home series in 1963 and 1964. Vanderbilt has won the previous two matchups against the Braves by a total of six points, 55-51 Dec. 1, 1951 at Robertson Fieldhouse and 82-80 Dec. 10, 1971 in Nashville. The Commodores are led head coach Kevin Stallings, who served as the head coach for Bradley's arch-rival Illinois State from 1993 through 1999.
