BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bradley women's tennis team finished the first day of the Bowling Green Invitational Saturday. Braves sophomore Emily Regenold (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) split a pair of matches in Flight 1 singles and will play for third place tomorrow.
Regenold earned a first round victory over Tonya Gombera of Akron in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 10-2. The Bradley sophomore came up short in the second round against Anna Volkova of Youngstown State, losing 6-0, 6-3. Regenold faces Xavier's Kara Courtney tomorrow for third place in Flight 1 singles.
The rest of the Braves struggled Saturday. Sophomore Kelly Donohue (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) lost her first match of the season in the opening round of Flight 2 singles, 6-3, 6-4 to Maha Guirguis of Toledo. Donohue lost her second match of the day to Carolina Castro Cota of Akron in straight sets. In Flight 3 singles, sophomore Jessica Buterbaugh (Paradise Valley, Ariz./Chapparal) suffered a pair of losses Saturday. In the quarterfinals, Buterbaugh fell in three sets to Jenn Myers of Cleveland State, 6-4, 2-6, 10-7. Buterbaugh lost later in the day to Aneta Maricevic of Detroit.
Bradley freshman Nicole Miller (Glendale Heights, Ill./Glenbard West) played a strong quarterfinal match in Flight 4 singles against Irena Lanc of Youngstown State, losing in three sets, 5-7, 6-3, 10-4. Miller lost later in the day to Detroit's Zelika Minic. In Flight 5 singles, Erin Krubeck (Boulder, Colo./Fairview) lost in the opening round to Bowling Green's Andrea Volle, 6-3, 6-1. In her second match of the day, Krubeck dropped a straight set decision to Alyssa Carlson of Akron, 6-4, 6-2. Junior Kim Braun (Racine, Wis./The Prairie School) played in Flight 6 singles, dropping an opening round match to Jeannette Feider of Xavier, 6,-3, 6-2. Braun's second round match ended in defeat at the hands of Sarah Horning of Toledo, 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles action, the Bradley pair of Miller and Buterbaugh dropped an opening round match in Flight 1 doubles, 8-6 to Jenna Nussbaum and Kelsey Jakupcin of Bowling Green. In Flight 2 doubles, Regenold and Braun lost 8-1 to Jenny Belsky and Nadia Zoubareva of Toledo. Krubeck and Donohue fell in Flight 3 doubles to Denisa Muntean and Morgan Ungerott of Cleveland State, 8-3.
Singles and doubles play continues tomorrow at Bowling Green. All six Braves will be in action.
