Box Score CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -- After dropping a 5-4 decision to Dayton to start the day, Bradley (4-4) bounced back with a 5-4 win against host Austin Peay to close out its participation in the Governor's Classic Monday afternoon at Raymon C. Hand Park.
Junior right fielder Colby Luttrell (Kincaid, Ill./South Fork H.S.) enjoyed a perfect day for the Braves. After going 2-for-2 with two walks in his four plate appearanances in the opener against the Flyers, Luttrell went 3-for-3 with a walk and a home run in his four plate appearances in the nightcap versus the Governors. He also stole two bases, scored three runs, drove in a pair of runs and threw out two runners at the plate on the day.
Luttrell's heroics helped make a winner of Bradley starter Rob Scahill, who improved to 3-0 on the year, despite allowing his first runs of the season. Scahill, who had allowed only two infield singles in his first two starts of the season, allowed three runs on nine hits in 7.2 innings. He walked two and struck out seven. Junior Kori Jensen, who started the game at second base, worked the final 1.1 innings to pick up his first career save as a Brave.
Austin Peay roughed up Scahill for two runs on three hits in the first inning, but the sophomore right-hander settled down after the slow start. He worked around a one-out double and a throwing error by third baseman Dan Brewer in the second inning and retired eight straight until the Governors used four fifth-inning singles to take a 3-2 lead.
Luttrell put the Braves on the board by leading off the second inning with his first home run of the year. He brought Bradley into a 2-2 tie in the third by driving home Brewer with a bases-loaded, two-out single.
With Scahill back in control on the mound, the Bradley offense rallied for three runs in the seventh to take a 5-3 lead. Rob Elliott led off with a walk and worked his way to third on a sacrifice bunt and passed ball. Brewer drew a two-out walk, then executed a double steal with Elliott to force a 3-3 tie. After stealing third, Brewer came home with the go-ahead run on Grant Escue's double to left center. Catcher Nick Mitidiero followed with a single to right center, plating Escue for an important insurance run.
Austin Peay tried to rally in the ninth after Hill hit a one-out triple to right center. After a Brewer throwing error put runners at the corners with one out, Farrar pulled the Governors to within 5-4 by hitting a sacrifice fly to left field. Jensen surrendered a walk to Kole, putting the tying run in scoring position, but ended the game by sriking out Hogue.
After having to endure cold weather through the first three weeks of the season, the Braves will return to action with five games in Bradenton, Fla., beginning with a Saturday contest against Vermont. Following the spring break trip to Florida, Bradley will open the Missouri Valley Conference season with a three-game set at Evansville March 21-23.
