OXFORD, Miss. -- Bradley junior Katie Nowak (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake H.S.) was one of five Bradley athletes to notch top-five finishes at the Ole Miss Invitational, finishing fourth in the 800 meter run Saturday afternoon in Oxford, Miss.
Nowak's time of 2:15.63 was a shade less than two seconds behind winner Natalie Johnson of Notre Dame (2:13.85). Her effort also narrowly missed equaling her time of 2:13.01 last week at the Duke Invitational which set the BU outdoor record in the 800. Freshman Mary Goldkamp (Florissant, Mo./McCluer North H.S.) was 21st in the 800 with a time of 2:30.34.
The Braves placed two runners in the top ten of the 1500 meter run. Sophomore Rachel Brubaker (Davis, Ill./Durand H.S.) was fifth with a time of 4:52.26, followed closely by sophomore Marlana Haefelin (Sandwich, Ill./Sandwich H.S.) in sixth place at 4:52.35. Freshman Lauren Fog (Harvard, Ill./Harvard H.S.) just missed a top ten finish with a time of 5:03.20 for 11th place.
BU also fared very well in field events, led by senior Kim Martin (Bartonville, Ill./Limestone H.S.), who cracked the top ten in two events. Her throw of 42 feet, four inches placed her eighth in the shot put. She finished seventh in the hammer throw with a throw of 154 feet, 11 inches. Sophomore Erika Sepich (Canton, Ill./Canton H.S.) continued to find success in the javelin, placing eighth with a throw of 108 feet, nine inches.
The Braves will visit the state of Iowa for the first time during the outdoor season for the Hawkeye Invitational on Saturday, April 19, beginning at 11 a.m.
