OMAHA, Neb. -- The Bradley women's tennis team won the doubles point, then got singles victories from junior Erin Krubeck (Boulder, Colo./Fairview) and sophomore Jessica Buterbaugh (Paradise Valley, Ariz./Chaparral) to go along with a forfeit singles victory to give the Braves a 4-0 win over host Creighton in the opening round of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships. The victory sends BU to the quarterfinals against top-seeded Indiana State Friday at 4:30 p.m.
The doubles pairing of Buterbaugh and sophomore Kelly Donohue (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) notched a victory at No. 1, defeating Sarah and Leesa Cadwallader, 8-4. With Creighton not fielding at doubles pairing at No. 3, the win at No. 1 secured the doubles point and an early lead for the Braves. Lauren Mastro and Kindsey Erickson won at No. 2 for the Bluejays, defeating sophomore Emily Regenold (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) and freshman Nicole Miller (Glendale Heights, Ill./Glenbard West), 8-6.
Krubeck earned the first singles victory of the dual, defeating Rachelle Shoji, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4. With junior Kim Braun (Racine, Wis./The Prairie School) earning a forfeit victory at No. 6, Buterbaugh ended the dual with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4 over Leesa Cadwallader. The remaining singles matches were stopped in the second set once the Braves clinched the match.
The victory for BU is the first at the MVC Championships since defeating Evansville, 4-2, on April 28, 2006 in Omaha.
BU wil face top-seeded Indiana State later Friday at 4:30 p.m. in Omaha in the quarterfinals. The Sycamores defeated the Braves, 7-0, on March 30 in Terre Haute.
