Box Score WICHITA, Kan. ? Wichita State shortstop Dusty Coleman hit for the cycle by going 4-for-4 with five runs batted in, leading the #14 Shockers (40-15, 18-5 MVC) to a 9-3 win against visiting Bradley (26-25, 10-13 MVC) in Missouri Valley Conference baseball action Friday night at Eck Stadium. By winning each of the first two games of the season's final series, Wichita State has extended its home winning streak versus the Braves to 23 games, dating back to 1996.
Junior Grant Escue drove in all three Bradley runs, first with a 2-run double to pull the Braves into a 2-2 tie in the fifth. Escue added a second double in the eighth inning to pull the Braves within 5-3.
Wichita State broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the eighth. Coleman had an RBI triple to start the eighth-inning outburst and complete the cycle. Kevin Hall added a 2-run double and Andy Dirks completed the scoring by driving Hall home with a double of his own.
Coleman put the hosts on the board first with a 2-run homer in the second inning. After Escue tied things up with his 2-run double in the fifth, Jones gave Wichita State the lead for good, 3-2, with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth and Coleman chased Scahill with a 2-run double. Coleman also singled in the fourth inning.
Sophomore right-hander Rob Scahill (4-5) suffered the loss by allowing five runs on five hits in his 5.1 innings. Junior closer Kori Jensen pitched the final 2.2 innings, allowing the four eighth-inning Shocker runs. Aaron Shafer (9-3) went the distance for Wichita State, scattering six hits and striking out eight in his 9.0 innings.
The teams will wrap up the regular season with a 2 p.m. game Saturday at Eck Stadium. In addition to trying to end its road losing streak versus the Shockers, Bradley will be trying to avoid its first sweep of the league season. The Shockers, however, will need to complete the sweep or hope for a Missouri State loss Saturday at UNI to claim at least a share of the Valley regular-season title and earn the No. 1 seed for next week's State Farm MVC Tournament, which they will host at Eck Stadium.
