Bradley senior Kim Martin (Bartonville, Ill./Limestone H.S.) and junior Katie Nowak (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake H.S.) have each been named to the Missouri Valley Conference Track & Field Scholar-Athlete team. Additionally, Nowak was named to the All-Missouri Valley Conference team after her second place finish in the 1500 meter run last Sunday at the MVC outdoor championships.
Nowak becomes the first BU athlete to be named to the outdoor all-conference team since a trio of Braves were named all-conference in 2003. Her time of 4:31.84 in the 1500 meter run last Sunday was less than a second behind winner Mica Land of Wichita State. A mechanical engineering major, Nowak has a 3.96 cumulative grade point average was also named to the MVC Cross Country Scholar-Athlete team last fall. Nowak is a six-time Bradley Country Insurance & Financial Services Scholar-Athlete of the Week, earning the award twice each during the cross country, indoor track and outdoor track seasons.
Martin finished ninth in the shot put at the outdoor championships last Friday with a career-best throw of 42 feet, nine inches. She also turned in a top-ten finish at the indoor championships in Cedar Falls, Iowa, last March, finishing eighth with a throw of 42 feet, 8.25 inches. The local product owns a 3.0 cumulative grade point average in elementary education.
Student-athletes must finish in the top eight of either the State Farm MVC Indoor Track & Field Championship or the State Farm Outdoor Track & Field Championship and hold a grade point average above 3.00 for inclusion on the scholar-athlete team. Athletes placing in the top three at outdoor championship are named all-conference.
