ST. LOUIS, Mo.
? Bradley senior first baseman/outfielder Grant Escue (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S./Stanford) has been named the Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, league commissioner Doug Elgin announced Tuesday.
Escue hit .444 (4-for-9) with a home run and five runs batted it to help the Braves to a 2-0 start and the championship of the 2009 Service Academy Spring Classic in Millington, Tenn. He collected two hits in each of the victories, including a grand slam in Bradley's 9-8 win over Pittsburgh in 10 innings last Friday. He added a stolen base in Saturday's 5-1 win over Memphis.
A political science major, Escue owns a perfect a 4.0 cumulative grade point average. To qualify for Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
A male student-athlete from Bradley has now won the weekly award from The Valley two weeks in a row after sophomore men's basketball player Sam Maniscalco (Chicago, Ill./St. Patrick H.S.) earned the award last week.
Escue and the Braves will return to action this Saturday in Nashville, Tenn. with a doubleheader against Lipscomb beginning at noon.
