Box Score 2 NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Bradley managed just seven hits and scored one run as Lipscomb posted 6-0 and 3-1 wins against the Braves to sweep a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon. The Braves fell to 10-12 on the season, while Lipscomb improved to 17-6 with the victories.
Lipscomb's Whitney Kiihnl tossed a complete-game two-hit shutout in the first game to help the Lady Bisons to a 6-0 victory in the opener. Christen Campbell drove in the only run Lipscomb would need in the bottom of the second inning with a run-scoring single to right center after Abby Keese was hit by a pitch to start the inning.
Bradley got its first base runner of the contest in the top of the fourth inning when senior Alycia Bachkora (Overland Park, Kan./Notre Dame de Sion) ripped a one-out double to left center. Junior Jacqueline Vitale (Indian Heak Park, Ill./Lyons Township) drew a two-out walk, but the Braves came up empty on their first scoring opportunity of the afternoon.
Keese had a one-out double in the bottom of the fourth inning and Campbell once again provided the big hit with a two-run homer to left field to push Lipscbomb's lead to 3-0. Campbell was the catalyst for a three-run sixth inning for the Lady Bisons after drawing a one-out walk. Caroline Mason followed with a double to put runners at second and third and Vanessa Medina drove home Campbell with a single to right field. A two-out base on balls issued to Megan Rottler loaded the bases and Lauren Dortwegt drove in two more runs with a single to left to give the Lady Bisons a 6-0 lead.
The Braves would attempt to rally in the top of the seventh inning after senior Miriam Wegmann (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) led off the frame with a walk and Vitale singled to left. Kiihnl settled down and retired the next three batters she faced to close out the 6-0 Lipscomb victory.
Junior Amanda Clack (Hillsboro, Mo./Hillsboro) suffered the loss for Bradley, falling to 1-2 on the season. Kiihnl struck out seven and walked two, while improving to 8-2 on the season with the victory in the circle for the Lady Bisons.
Bradley got on the scoreboard early in the nightcap, plating its only run of the day in the top of the first inning. Bachkora got things started with a one-out double and came around to score on a Wegmann single to give Bradley an early 1-0 advantage.
Senior pitcher Ashley Birdsong (Otis, Ore./Taft) kept Lipscomb off the scoreboard in the first two innings, but the Lady Bisons scratched out a run in the bottom of the third. Megan Rottler led off the top of the third inning with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Kellie Sirus tied the game at 1-1 with a two-out run scoring double to center field.
The Braves stranded single runners in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, before Lipscomb broke the game open with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Campbell had a one-out triple to left center and scored on a sacrifice fly to give the Lady Bisons a 2-1 lead. Four consecutive two-out singles drove home an insurance run for Lipscomb and the Lady Bisons had the bases loaded when Birdsong got out of the jam without any further damage after getting Courtney Billington to fly out to end the threat.
Junior Janay Mitchell (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) reached on an error with one out in the top of the seventh, but Campbell retired the next two hitters to close out the win as she improved to 3-0 on the year. Birdsong suffered the loss for the Braves, striking out five while walking none as she fell to 6-5 on the season.
Bradley returns to action Saturday when the Braves open a season-long nine-game homestand with a noon doubleheader against Missouri Valley Conference foe Wichita State at Laura Bradley Park.
