TOWSON, Md. -- Bradley senior leftfielder Grant Escue (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S.) has been voted a second-team ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American, according to an announcement Tuesday morning by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
An honorable mention All-Missouri Valley Conference outfielder in 2009, Escue maintained his 4.0 cumulative grade point average by posting another perfect 4.0 semester during the 2009 Spring term at Bradley. A second-year transfer from Stanford University, the political science major ended his career with a .298 batting average and 41 extra-base hits in 130 career games played. He hit all seven of his career home runs as a Brave and shared the Bradley team lead with four dingers in 2009. Among his season highlights, Escue belted a grand slam in the season-opening, 10-9 victory against Pittsburgh, delivered a walk-off double in the first game of the April 1 doubleheader versus North Dakota and belted a 3-run home run in the April 22 win at Eastern Illinois.
The Bradley Baseball program now has produced an Academic All-American three consecutive seasons and five times in the last six years. The Bradley Department of Athletics as a whole has produced at least one national scholar-athlete (as determined by CoSIDA, the I-AAA Athletic Director's Association or national coaching organizations) in 12 consecutive years.
Escue remains one of 10 national finalists for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, which rewards excellence in the classroom, on the field and in the community. National fan ballotting for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award continues through Sunday at www.seniorclassaward.com and the winner will be announced during the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., next month.
