Former Bradley Baseball player Dan Brewer got a taste of the Major Leagues Sunday afternoon.  Playing for the New York Yankees Class A affiliate Charleston (S.C.) RiverDogs in the South Atlantic League, Brewer went 1-for-2 against future Hall of Fame pitcher John Smoltz, who was pitching for the Boston Red Sox affiliate Greenville (S.C.) Drive on a rehab assignment.

In the “Sally League” version of the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry, Brewer was just 3-for-13 in the four-game set, but he did walk three times and swipe three bases in Friday's 5-4 victory.  The highlight of his weekend came Sunday, however, when he got to face Smoltz.  Brewer singled during the third inning, helping the RiverDogs to an early 1-0 lead.

An eighth round selection in the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the New York Yankees, Brewer is enjoying a solid year in his first full season as a pro.  Playing in the outfield, Brewer is batting .338 with 11 doubles, a triple and two home runs through 39 games.

Elsewhere around the minors, Ryan Curry has raised his early-season batting average to .280 for the Jupiter (Fla.) Hammerheads, the Class A affiliate of the Florida Marlins in the Florida State League.  After hitting only .100 in seven April games, Curry has hit .329 since May 1 and recently enjoyed multiple hits in four straight games.

Strong-armed catcher Ryan Eigsti is hitting .259 for the Wilmington (N.C.) Blue Rocks, the Class A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals in the Carolina League, and hard-throwing pitcher Brandon Magee owns a 4-4 overall record so far this season in the Toronto Blue Jays minor league system.  Magee has gone 2-2 for both Dunedin in the Florida State League and New Hampshire in the Class AA Eastern League.  He owns a 5.40 earned run average in his first six appearances for New Hampshire this season.
