Box Score PEORIA, Ill. -- Southern Illinois used a balanced offensive attack and outblocked Bradley 10-4 to control play at the net as the Salukis swept the Braves 25-20, 25-16, 25-12 in Missouri Valley Conference volleyball action Friday. SIU used a potent offensive attack, hitting .372 as a team in the victory.
Bradley (4-12 overall, 0-5 MVC) held a 17-16 lead in the opening set when Jennifer Berwanger recorded two blocks and a kill to highlight a 5-0 Southern Illinois spurt which put the Salukis in front 21-17. The Braves pulled to within three points at 21-18 and 22-19 before Jessica Whitehead tallied back-to-back kills for SIU to help close out a 25-20 Saluki win.
Southern Illinois (10-4 overall, 1-3 MVC) heated up in the second set, attacking at a .515 clip in the frame. Freshman Lauren Zerante (Elmhurst, Ill./York) recorded five kills on just seven swings in the second set to lead the Braves, but the Salukis collected 18 kills with just one error and three blocks en route to a 25-16 victory.
SIU scored the first five points of the second set and never looked back, quickly pushing the advantage to 18-5. The Salukis hit .481 in the third set and a combined .500 in the final two sets as they completed the sweep with a 25-12 third-set win.
Zerante led the Braves with eight kills and tied for team-high honors with three blocks. Junior Rachelle Dejean (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) tied for match-high honors with 14 digs and recorded her 900th career dig late in the second set to become the 15th player in program history to reach the 900-dig mark. Senior Megan Schmidt (Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic) collected seven kills on just 12 attacks, while boasting a .500 attack percentage.
Berwanger led all players with 12 kills to pace the Salukis, while Alysia Mayes hit .588 and added 11 kills and six blocks. Jessica Whitehead tallied nine kills with no errors for a .529 attack percentage and Alicia Johnson matched Whitehead with nine kills.
Bradley closes out a three-match homestand Saturday with a 7 p.m. match against Evansville.
